Moving to a 2016 640d
Hi folks,
After more than 20 years driving 5 series, starting with the e39 followed by an e60 and an F10 for the last 10 years, I am finally moving to a 2016 640d Grand coupe , the F13 in my eyes is simply one of the best-looking modern BMW. The current 5 series G30 simply never did it for me, had the option to drive one for full month, but new design direction is simply all over the place, the only new cars I like currently, the 3 series, the X5, and the 8 series. I am a big fun of the F12/13 dashboard, don't thing we see designs like it with the new all screen/ iPad cockpits. Any recommendations on what to check when picking my 640d, a 2016 with 60k km (37500 mi), M sport plus pack, and few other options. I decided to stick with BMW dealers, so a 2-year BMW warranty. Oh the 640d I am getting is a Black Sapphire one, matching my black 1988 635 csi. |

Why are you getting a diesel for?
Sorry I'm just curious. I personally really dislike them. Maybe it's a misconception. But what puts you off the 640i petrol? |

I am originally from London, moved to west coast of Ireland in 2006, car taxes here are give and take double of UK, so when buying a new car you get hit by VAT 21% and you get a second tax called VRT going at 25% on average linked to emissions, so after my e39 last car I owned in the UK, had to switch to 4 pot engines diesel and still paid over what you folks in the UK will end paying for straight 6, this means petrol straight 6 engines are literally as rare as a Ferrari 280 GTO in Ireland, we lately upgraded our family car from X5 40e to new X5 45e, so our first new straight six petrol engine thanks to the hybrid, the car still cost us some 20k more than UK prices.
If I am to import a 640i from UK, with Brexit I am having to pay VAT 21%, import tax 10% and VRT based on emission another 25%, so looking at north of 55k for 2016 car, hence the only option is to stay with the local market now consisting of only diesels, and mind you still paying a fortune! For 2017 640d in UK you looking at around £22k (€25k), In Ireland you looking at around €40k for a 2016, maybe cheaper outside main dealer network. I also live in the country side, so good mileage, and for that Diesel make sense, as for my petrolhead side, I use my 911 4s when kids not around. |

Another west of Ireland 640d here. Yeah the taxes are a nightmare alright
I have my 2015 a year now and no major issues. Few suspension issues when I got it so replaced control arms and added a eibach pro 12 kit. Suspension felt really soft to me. Bottoming out going over speed bumps. Not sure if that is normal or were just worn. In garage at moment getting full service and gearbox service (80k miles) Saw some nightmare stories about water drain issues and yellow grommet - loads on internet if you google it, so they're checking out the drains for me as well |

Hi Galwegian,
I am also from Galway, nice knowing someone from Galway after all these years in this forum. I settled for 2016 with 60k km, I am getting the car from Joe Duffy Dublin, hopping the 2-year BMW warranty will take care of any nasty surprises. I wonder is your car a black or carbon black, I see one often in town near the Cathedral a 151 grand coupe, I also sometimes see a black Coupe. Quote:

what puts most people off a used 640i is actually finding one in the spec you want, they are very rare in the UK. When I was searching for mine almost a year ago with my search criteria (mileage/age/etc) it listed about 3 640i's, and about 25 640d's.

I bought my 640D/F13 almost a year ago, a 2017 car with 52k miles, full bmw SH, a great spec and its been amazing. Its the perfect blend of performance / luxury and economy. My only gripe is i wish the rear seats folded flat but other than that i cant think what i would ever replace it with?

Like the wheels, similar to the new M5 CS I guess, colour works with the Black.
Not the car I was refering to, with stock 20 inches delivered with the Sport pack plus, like most of Irish 640's. |

Nice for sure to see folks from the west I use to be a member of the BMW club Ireland back in 2013 when I purchased my 1988 635 CSI, still in the
garage, need some work. One thing for sure we in the West of Irleand do have is some amaizing roads for driving, check this video from the porsche club Ireland we just need more dry weather that's all |

Paid £17k for mine ... 640i GC facelift 2015 with 100k miles. I'm ok with the mileage. My e46 is on 235k miles and self maintained (engine side) so I know what needs to be done to keep this thing going. Spark plugs and coil packs are probably original so I'll definitely be doing them soon (they don't always give codes when coils are intermittently failing). Having a look now there's only about 15 640i GCS available in UK, and those online have too many missing buttons for my liking...! I guess you have to be patient, like very patient. |

With you on this, like the news, always and only bad news makes it to the top. my 5 series F10 with 4pot diesel engine was also know online for failing, 10 years later approaching 200k km, not one single problem. this is with the BMW performance pack added after delivery in 2011.

Space grey simply works with black wheels, the first car I considered was a space grey, and immediately I thought of black rims.

With a classic, always something I guess a good classic car is one with character of its own!
For my one, I need a new exhaust, and a new fuel tank for now, did some work on suspension, one big mod I am planning is to covert the gearbox to a manual, a big job but need to make decision sooner than later as e28 gear boxes that fit the e24 are likely to be instinct in few years. I am of course still debating this move. |
