Brakes?

Took a drive North yesterday and ended up in San Luis Obispo - about 180 miles from home. I had noticed the dreaded shudder when applying the brakes between 60 and about 80. My head immediately goes ‘warped rotors’ but I hear this is rare. I think it’s probably uneven wear or deposits or something like that.

I suppose I need to look for rotors and Maybe pads. Was told yesterday that my front pads still had 8mm. The dealer replaced my rear pads under my prepaid service agreement several months ago, so I assume that the front rotors may be the culprit(s).

Should I even ask BMW if they’ll cover this? The car has about 40k on the clock and three months left on the factory warranty. I’ve read that they don’t usually cover this.

All that being said, if it needs to be done, I of course will not throw an extra grand at the dealer. I know a few indies that are quite good and usually about 60% of the price.

Do I go with after market rotors and pads? OEM?

I would appreciate any and all advice from y’all.

Thanks in advance!

First you should take it out on a empty road and do 5 or 6 hard slow downs from say 60 mph to 20 mph to heat everything up and clean the rotors. Don't engage ABS. Keep doing it until you smell the brakes and then cruise for 10 miles or so to let everything cool down. Don't stop with the brakes applied while they are still hot. That maybe all you need to do.

Thanks! I’ll try that first.

I did powerstop performance pads and rotors and they've been awesome. Was around $600 total and I've had no issues and the coating has held up great through two winters.

Just checking in to see which brake setup you ended up with. I'm considering the power stop front and rears for my 640xi.

At the end of my warranty, the dealer finally agreed that my car was shuddering and replaced the pads and turned the rotors. This seemed to do the trick and now I’m off the hook as it were for brake work for at least 20,000 miles. Car says 31,000, but I tend to take that with a grain of salt.

When (if) I do have to replace the rotors - should I have the car that long - I think I would go for Zimmerman as they supply BMW with brake parts. The only other thing I would ten to make sure of, is that I got two-piece rotors, like the car came with from the factory.
