2014 M6 Gran Coupe - Issues?

Good afternoon.

Im looking at M6 Gran Coupe, possibly a 2014 or 2015.... since most of these are our of factory warranty are there "issues" cropping up on these cars or items a potential buyer should keep in mind or look for?

Thanks for the feedback !

I have '14 M6GC still under factory warranty and I just took it in to the dealership yesterday for a "minor rear diff seal leak". This was found when I got the car last year and had a PPI done. It's about a $1,100 job, but 100% covered under warranty. Other than that no issues.

My buddy that has been a master tech at BMW for over 10 years has told me that our cars are pretty solid cars. Of course there is small annoying things that can happen and are common issues like most cars but can be easily fixed.

But you need to understand these cars were like $130k + MSRP, so parts, even doing yourself are pretty pricey, so put that in consideration. Even do your own oil change will cost you about $120 bucks with OEM oil and filter. Dealership will want like 4 times that. So I would factor all that in as well.

All that being said, I have a 2014 with 60k miles. I only needed to replace plugs and 1 coil but generally plugs should be replaced at that time. I got the infamous Drive train malfunction, but it was either the #6 coil or plugs to just replaced all plugs and coil, which was only like $200 bucks in parts

I posted this in another thread asking a similar question,

I ended up with a 2015 M6 GC fully optioned with the competition package. 27k miles. I haven’t owned it long enough to say anything about the engine or transmission. But I have come across a few posts where engines have been replaced. The transmission seems to be fine, but if you are planning on increasing power there is always an increase in risk associated with the engine and transmission.

But from my own personal experience I am in the middle of having the A/C evaporator replaced at the dealer which is a $3700 repair at retail cost. I’ve already spent $370 for a drain and fill to try and identify if there was a leak and the dealership couldn’t find it anywhere. So their next assumption is the evaporator which is buried in the dash. Luckily BMW USA agreed to cover 80 percent of the cost of the repair. The overall situation has been an absolute pain to deal with.

So my advice is to find something with a warranty and/or get a really thorough pre purchase inspection along with reviewing the maintenance history on the vehicle.

2014 M6 GC. All stock. Bought used @ 27k, now has 43k.

Replaced battery & communications module after SOS warning light came on.

Replaced leaking turbo coolant inlet, rear transmission seal, & oil pan gasket.

Replaced leaking turbo crossover pipe, turbo coolant return lines, turbo coolant heater jacket, leaking oil return cover, air intake tubes, crankcase vent hose.

Covered under CPO/goodwill, but otherwise would probably be $5k+ in repairs.

So was it the battery or communication module that caused the sos malfunction?

Update solved the 'sos' issue but I had to get all of my codings redone.

Did you have to take the car to a dealer to update the car?

Now we are talking... so no need for new equipment? Just a recode?

Yes, I got the update done at the dealer. But keep in mind that the update will reset all of your personal codings to default.

I don't think you can fix the sos malfunction warning by coding. Dealer told me they want to first try fixing that issue by giving me the update. If the update doesn't take care of the issue, they were going to change module or something. In my case, the update took care of it.

I have the car for a year and at 52k, I had to replace a battery and the rear axles leak a little bit. Other than that, it has been rock solid. So far the M6 GC has been the most well built car I have had. No rattle and materials are high quality. Best car I have owned in term of issues and quality ( I own all Japanese cars before this BMW) .
