Why the sudden depreciation?
Just wanted to get everyone's opinion... Why, it seems, all the sudden our M6 cars (especially the F06) have taken a nose dive in the market.
Maybe it's just perception, but I help track values through MMR for folks through a dealer friend of mine, and just in the past few months our values have dropped over $5k, where-as the comparable M5 seems to be holding steady (similar years). The announcement of the M8 would hurt our resale value, sure, but it just didn't seem to affect the M5 market as much. Hell, even coupes seem to be holding strong, where-as previously the F06 > F13 as far as pricing goes. Have we hit rock bottom? I doubt it, just look at the E63s. You can get a decent mileage example well under 20k. Though, the rod bearing and SMG issues plague that platform. I recently stopped daily driving my car to try and save it from getting so beat up. Here in Dallas, the roads are terrible, and I've had to put 3 sets of tires and replace 2 wheels in the past 6 months. So, I've got an expensive, depreciating asset in my garage doing nothing. Kind of sad, but my fear of something expensive breaking keeps me from enjoying it. Autotrader has a few 18/19 MY cars in the six figures, while low mileage 16's are selling in the upper 70k range. Mine, for example was in the low $60k range just last year, now I'd be lucky to get $45k for it. Audi RS7's which have a similar MSRP (if not lower) are holding strong in the 60-70k range (well equiped low mileage 2015s). I feel like our cars are much more special, due to the production numbers and sheer looks. Anyway... yes, cars depreciate... Yes, cars are not investments. These things I know, just curious as to why the values have plummeted. Thanks! |

I feel as though since BMW keeps throwing "Gran Coupe" into everything it sees, is the problem. there are a lot of fears owning the car out of warranty as well and many people that feared the previous gen M6 think the s63 in our cars will have a similar fate even though they are rather different in design. the only difference between a M5 and M6GC is styling, yes there re differences in the car but both are roughly the same. I have seen some higher mileage F series M5s for under $30k now, but I still see M6s have a $10k premium over the 5.
I feel your pain though about the rough roads. I am in Boston and I daily my M6 convertible except for when it snows, right now potholes kill the car. I haven't suffered anything to bad yet though. everyone I have personally talked to loves their cars and hasn't had anything go seriously bad. 1 or 2 soft close latches and a door sill light that went out. nothing else and the cars I've seen around here are getting close to 100k on them. I think the build quality on these cars is incredible compared to previous models! |

There's nothing new in the numbers you've posted. If you looked at the numbers around this time last year, it was the same with all the MY bumped up by 1 year.... '14s were low $60s, '15s were in low $70s.
So this time next year, '16s will be in the $60s, '15s will be in the $50s and '14s will be in the $40s. I calculated when I bought my '14 GC in December 2017, I was going to eat $10k of depreciation in CY2018, and another $10k in CY2019. Then from there on, the rate will level off to reach $30k by year 2022.

That's why you just drive the snot out of your car and enjoy it for what it is! I also own a 2015 i3 Rex with less than 20k miles and it's probably worth only 17k now... msrp was close to 50k+.

It depends on mileage, but a '15 M6 GC with 60k miles can fetch as low as upper 30's. So the valuation is actually lower than your think.

I've been tracking the prices for 2 years since I bought mine last year and am selling it now, from what I've seen it comes down to mileage and comp pack/ceramics, warranty rather than model year. As long as there's competition package ie 14+, the 50k+ mileage examples are in the 40s+ and the <50k/warranty cars are maintaining 50-70k.
The higher mileage 13's and non competitions are now in the mid to high 30s. Bottom on these will be around 25-30 in a few years, i saw one beat up 2013 with 105k miles for 30k! Last edited by wtfmateim65; 02-20-2019 at 08:44 PM.. |

I don't agree. Bottom is in the teens eventually...still have a few years for that though. That said, those cars will need repairs so those buyers may still have 25-30k invested in it. 14s and 15s are already trading in the 30's.

You’re not alone in your observation of the rapid decline in BMW value of lately. I know someone that works at Alphera Financial (BMW Finance). He told a buddy of mine and myself a few weeks ago , that BMW’s being mass produced like the average none luxury car brands. And that BMW has been marketing their vehicles all over the place. So, that do impact the value of their vehicles. The industry is viewing BMW like any ordinary auto manufacturer (Toyota, Honda,etc.). I think that demand a supply is driving down the value of BMW. Even the revered “M” class BMWs are taking a big hit. BMW has very little differences between M vehicles and the none M vehicles in BMWs lineup anymore.

I haven't seen any at that level - best value I have seen after searching for 2 years is 14s, clean, 25-35k miles sitting at about 50 even. Anything below 50 are for cars with over 45k miles (always a barometer for repairs).
I had always wanted an m5, dreaming of an m6, but never thought a car with a 130k sticker would be attainable or in my budget. I think its based on the 6 being for a very select crowd and the 5 being the legacy m sedan still. Seems as once this flushes out, they could very well increase on value once they are obsolete. They are still amazing machines in both form and function - love the fact they aren't very common. |

Here in Dallas, M3/4/5 (not a e36 sedan with a 5 speed :P ) are a dime a dozen. I hardly see a M6, and when I do it's a vert, or coupe. I guess such a niche car would never hold trade in value. Sites like Bring-a-Trailer would be good to see a M6 cross the auction block to get a better understanding of what someone is willing to pay. I see a lot of good deals even here. Quote:

I'm talking retail. Subtract $5k and you'll get wholesale, am I about right?
Anyways, I always think about it on a retail price level, because I will always attempt to sell it directly to the next owner.

I buy from manheim daily and bmw tends to lose value rather quickly compared to mercedes. This is because the large amount of lease returns.Ive noticed the same with bmw m4 since a lot of 36 month lease have ended.

I'm going to bet you the M3/4 depreciates less or on par with the C63. It won't depreciate more. I know that for a fact for E series BMW M cars because I've been tracking retail values for them forever.
