how to tell difference between N63 engine versions

I'm thinking about buying f06 650i or f10 550i and I know that original N63 engine (N63B44O0) is basically a horror story, I also know that they started using N63TU (N63B44O1) in 2013-2019 models and N63TU2 (N63B44O2) in 2016-2019 models, so all 2013-2015 models should have N63TU and 2016-2019 models might have N63TU or N63TU2. ideally I want to get N63TU2 and I want to know how to tell difference between TU and TU2, or even if TU/TU2 engines are actually more reliable than original N63.

The n63TU engine debuted in different model years between the f10 5 series & f06 6 series.

The n63 variant is different than the n63tu/tu2 engines…you should be able to find more doing a simple google search. Here’s some charts to help figure out which models have the original N63 engine…and some of the changes to the N63TU engine vs the original N63 engine is at the bottom:

Qsilver7 tysm for your answer! how reliable has your 650i been? is it worth it to get one with N63TU version? I used to own 14' m5 and its been pretty reliable for my taste for its power level. I know that owning an BMW might come with its troubles but I have no problems with it, I just dont want it to be any less reliable than s63 and unreliable like original n63

My 2015 TU has been trouble free. Spark plugs only so far. Uses zero oil. I would personally not get the original N63.

I have owned 3 BMWs with the N63TU engine and have not had any issues.
  • 2013 650ix GC (this one usually need a quart of oil between the annual oil changes…but was not an excessive oil drinker) (sold it back in 2022 still running strong @ approx 99k)
  • 2014 X5 50i (now at approx 94K)
  • 2015 650ix GC (now @ approx 69K)

yeah I know that BMWs usually need oil between oil changes, I used to do mine every 3k miles on my m5 and had to add some in between changes, I'm used to it and its completely fine for me. I'm thinking about buying 16' 650i GC with 53k miles its completely stock but will do ECU/TCU and downpipes, now I'm wondering how this engines respond to mods, if they become unreliable like original N63s if modded, anyways, tysm for your help

As I understand it, there is a whole Facebook group devoted to N63 mods.
