Interesting.
Mobile 1 0-40 was what I used when I owned MBs because that is what MB recommended. Personally, I think all this brain damage over oil is a bunch of crap. If you use a quality synthetic oil in the correct viscosity range I am quite certain your engine will not explode.

This is the same filter I have bought from BMW dealerships. It is the OEM filter. Part # BMW:11 42 7 583 220

Remember Derek, you have a Z4 with a different engine. Most of us have the N63/N63TU engine. Different filter for that engine!!

There are a few types of LiquiMoli motor oils (all 5W-30):

- Long Time Hi-Tec
- Special Tec LL
- Top Tec 4200
- Top Tec 4605

Any idea what the differences are?

Thanks

Yeah, us N63TU owners are lucky in the sense an oil change requires only 9 quarts,

Agree with Opie55

I sold/gave my last three BMW's away with 250,000+ miles on them. Have used Mobile 1 0W-40 for years. Can anyone really testify that they got rid of a car because of an oil related problem? Usually people get rid of old cars because of electrical issues, rust, beat up, don't care anymore, etc. I too think all this oil stuff is hype/marketing.

Use good synthetic oil and OEM filter, change at a reasonable interval, don't beat on it, and you'll get rid of the car for other than oil/motor related issues.

When would I use 0W-40 vs. 5W-30?

Thanks

number before the W is how viscous during cold starts, the number after the W is how viscous it is once it is up to temp

of all those liquid molly oil you listed, minor differences such as the additives, the important thing to take away is to make sure it is LL-01 spec oil.

personally why I use 5W40 and not 5W30 is that I have a 650, where the turbo sits in between the V of the engine which is prone to heat soaking, having a 40 slighly helps with temperature control and lubrication under high temps.

I was just on Mobile's site and they recommend 0W-30 for the motor oil for my car and Castrol recommends 5W-30 but they both also recommend 0W-40 and 5W-40.

As I live in Chicago and have the 650 GC, which one should I buy?

Please help. Thanks

I just had an oil change at the dealer 2 days ago and this is what they used. Oh, they also replaced an oil pan gasket.

Any are fine. BMW used to sell you 0-30, but now if I buy it 5-30. Look at your manual. It also says 0-40 is fine.

Derek, how much did they charge you for just the oil/filter change?

And thanks to all who helped.

Mine was free because it was still under the maintenance plan but would have been $99 otherwise. I have the N55 6 cylinder, it’s slightly higher for the 8 cylinder.

Did you check the BMW TIS website for their oil viscosity & oil brand types? If not, here’s a direct link...take note of the BMW LL-01 (click enclosure 4 link at top of chart for brands & viscosity) and/or BMW LL-01 FE (click enclosure 5 link at top of chart for brands & viscosity): https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...enance/1PSryV8

Thanks Qsilver7. That is really informative.

I have also been made aware of Amsoil European Car Formula 5W-40 Classic ESP Synthetic (it has the BMW LL-01 specification) but it is not on the list in the link you provided.

Can I still use this oil in my car?

If it has LL01, you can use it.

BMW oil used to be made by Castrol so older BMW's do have castrol stamped on the oil caps but if you notice on our cars there is no castrol stamp anymore. The BMW oil that is sold now for our cars (and all Direct injection BMWs) is the BMW Twin Power Turbo oil which if you simply google you'll find is made by Shell. If you actually look at the BMW bottle, their oil only meets the BMW LL-01 standard which is their old standard. It does not meet their current standard which is BMW LL-04 which is pretty crazy. Some of the oils that were mentioned in this thread (Luquidmoly, Motul, etc meet BMW LL-04). This fact alone is proof in my opinion that this is a "cheaper" quality oil.

Wasn't trying to insult anyone just sharing the facts. The move was made to Shell producing the oil when they lowered the mileage interval on their oil changes from 15,000 miles. They were going to use more oil because of more frequent oil changes which for the first 2 years would be free. Food for thought.

Interesting.
Interestingly enough, Mobil 1 technically doesn't have a oil that meets BMW standards anymore. Their 0W-40 Euro oil used to but that certification was removed recently. Take a look at a bottle next time you're in the parts store.

Again it only meets BMW LL-01 not BMW LL-04 so that statement is a blatant lie. Kind of misleading.
