oil filter cap with drain plug

Has anyone tried to use the oil filter cap with the drain plug on the M6. It would avoid a mess when removing the filter by allowing you to drain the filter housing before removing the oil filter cap and cartridge.

Interesting, someone on the M5 forum mentioned this feature was available. When I change my oil last week I did not notice that my cap had the plug.

Clarifies that a cap with a plug is a special part.

So when I change my oil, I tried a different method and it was a lot less messier. In the past I simply unscrew the filter right away, an oil splattered everywhere. This time around, I just unscrewed enough to allow the oil to trickle out. It takes longer and it does get the housing dirty, but it avoided the mess and the splatter.

I think this filter cap with a plug is still a bit messy. You still have to clean the cap.

This also clarifies the smaller rubber o-ring that comes with the oil change kit.

Do you guys know where I could find a filter cap with a drain plug ?
I see a number of them from Hengst in the ether, but does anyone have experience with precise compatibility with our engines ?

Found this one.
A bit pricey, but looks like this could be the one.
Anybody out there with one ?

If you use the part database sites “creatively”...you can easily figure out which part number you need to search for.

Multiple BMW models use the same oil filter...so click on the 11 digit BMW part nbr for the oil filter you require. Then look at the list of BMW models with the same/similar engine and do some multiple clicking on those models to see which ones use the same diagram but will have item #3 & #4 NOT grayed out. That will be the oil filter cap with the removable drain bolt.

If memory serves me correct...I believe it was the N63 engines that had the drain in the oil filter cap. And since the n63 and n63tu uses the same oil filter...the cap is the same size...only difference is the drain plug was removed from the N63TU (is it the same way on the S63TU?). Switching the oil filter cap was something I considered after I first got my 2013 650ix and saw that the cap didn’t have the drain and was concerned how messy it was going to be to do the first oil change. My 06 X5 4.4 with the N62 engine has a drain in the oil filter cap...so I was familiar with draining the filter first.

And if you do switch caps...you get to use the extra small O-ring that comes with the filter kit if you have the TU engine.

EDIT: haven’t found the 11 digit BMW part number for the cap with the drain...but the drainless oil filter cap started with FEB/2011 build date-up. Seems like the part databases have been updated and seem to only offer the drainless oil filter caps, now.

Yes, Q I did part number searches and found no love. I had a 650i and still have an oil filter on the shelf. The S63 filter is much longer in length relative to the N63, and if I remember the filter cap for the 650 was shorter also in its height. Unless they’re specific for the S63, a cover for a N63 will be to short.

Add: I also note that Hengst advertised their cap with drain was compatible for various 8 cylinder BMW engines would work on the M. Several customer reviews spoke of size and thread pitch a no go for their M’s.

Try googling the PN. You can see some parts on FCP and ECS with the plug.

...this uncertainty is probably the reason I gave up on the idea of switching to a “drainable” oil cap....I just “glove-up” and “go-for-it”...plus I us a long handle wrench along with the oil cap removal tool...which also helps...but end up having to clean my wrench and the cap removal tool.
