High Mileage 640d Remap?

Hi All,

Has anyone remapped a high mileage 640d? I am currently on 115k miles and with full service history, it has never let me down or failed an MOT.

I do 15k miles a year and I am usually just cruising to and from work. However on the odd occasion when I fancy a little fun, I am somewhat bored of the standard power. I know these map really well with impressive results, I am just a little cautious with the mileage.

Anyone with any experience on remapping on similar mileage?

Stage 1 should be fine from what I have read. I guess if the car has had a trashed life then the clutch might need replacing. Go somewhere trusted like Simon (hes done loads x40d maps) at www.e-maps.co.uk, evolve automotive, bwchiptune etc

hi.
pixel,640ds are all automatic..no manual gearboxes with a clutch.

i had my last 640d remapped stage 1 at 70k miles and its done over 130k now,,zero issues..
the independant specialist that looks after my car has a 640d he runs himself and his wife has one..both stage 1 remaps..one has done 170k miles ...the other 140k miles..both zero issues..
the main thing is halve the oil change frequency from 19k miles to 10k max..and use decent oil..
i see you are in leeds,we have all had our 640ds remapped at york..
not sure if im allowed to mention tuning shop name..they are on facebook too.
stage 1 is perfect for a 640d..its really just optimising the mapping for uk altitude/fuel quality ect..stage 2 has to remove DPF which is instant MOT failure.i now own my 3rd 640d.75k miles and thats been stage 1 remapped too.i did try eco remap but it wasnt very nice....a generic stage 1 should be approx 380bhp...all of my 640ds and my indi 640ds gained approx 2 to 3 mpg too.

Great info and good to know. I'm looking at air oil separator as I've recently cleaned out my intake manifold and want to prevent the sludge build up as well as limit the amount of oil filling up my intercooler.

Stage 1 on the list after fitting. It should complement the tune with slightly cleaner air.

one other interesting thing,is everytime you have the dme remapped it is logged in a reflash counter...this counter is in the dme somewhere , i cant remember where,posibly vehicle order?
this isnt affected by normal software updates,,but just when mapping files are overwritten.

f13 ect are out of manufacturer warranty but apparently insurance companys can,and have,accessed this counter after the car has had an accident ect...cross referencing the total number of reflashes with authorised bmw map files updates will calculate the number of unauthorised mapping updates..and then the question would be ...did you inform your insurance company?

my tuner showed me this counter..

perhaps quicksilver or opie might have more information on this.

i wouldnt let this sway your decision to get a stage 1 remap though..

oil separator is a good idea,,
my last 7 cars have been bmw 3.0 turbo diesels..
oily sludge in the inlet manifold is a problem..on all my cars i found the EGR valve causes issues here..
the problem isnt the EGR hitting its fully open or fully closed points due to carbon build up,,its the inside of the valve been coked up and reduces bore size of valve...so instead of the set amount of exhaust gasses been recirculated through the EGR valve to the inlet manifold ,the reduced valve opening lets much less recirculated exhaust gasses to the inlet manifold...so..more exhaust gasses go straight through the DPF ,which fills it up quicker than normal,resulting in more frequent DPF regens.
so if you are getting regens less than 250 miles i would change the EGR valve,,if it wasnt changed with the bmw EGR cooler recall.
if the EGR valve is coked up you will get less exhaust gas into the inlet manifold,but more exhaust gas (not been burnt twice) going through the DPF.
my independant specialist (ex bmw master tech) uses forte power cleaner machine..we endoscoped mine after 70k miles,then power cleaned it and the results were really great.
whenever i visit him he always has a couple of diesel inlet manifolds gunked up,some as low as 40k miles.which have caused major problems.especially earlier ones gumming swirl flaps up.
i had my auto trans fluid changed,,it smells real bad in the car for hundreds of miles after. this is normal usually.
its hard to tell if its been done before as there is no facility to log auto trans fluid change on idrive as bmw say it is lifetime fluid and doesent need to be changed,but zf,who makes the transmition for bmw says change fluid every 60k miles...

It should be fine, but if possible you really need to check your rad bearings.
As the temperature gets higher in the engine block, diesels can cool themselves by injecting more diesel fuel in the engine, so there is an excess of heat.

A bigger intercooler is really needed if you want more power and don’t want to destroy your engine.

I have a new engine installed, and need firstly to drive a bit slowly for 2000KM.
But I do have installed the Wagner cooler to ensure the Engine does not get hot under load. As you can see above, this damage happened with a stage 1 remap, it just got too hot.

Ive had and continue to have plenty of 6 pot diesel Bimmers with over 100k miles on them running healthy remaps including currently owning and running 2 x N57 twin turbs (sadly in two seperate cars) both running 375hp, 800mn. The one in my F01 is at 115k and the one in my F25 has done nearly 140k
