License Plate Bracket

Hey guys,

The 650i cabrio is home and in the garage until spring. One question. One options are there for the front license plate bracket? In Quebec, where the car has lived it's life until now, they don't have a front plate, so there is no bracket installed on the car. I know the dealer will give me one (free) that I can screw into the front bumper, but since I have a nice clean bumper without a bracket, I'd rather find another way to mount the plate. Don't want to use the tow hook spot. If any one has any links, please provide. Thanks...

Why would you want to run a front plate? I ruins the look of the car. While it is technically required most places, many don't run them, and few cops care.

Not here in Manitoba. Ticket first time and then they can impound your car. Front plate here if you want to drive it.

I don't "want" a front plate, but I have no choice, $110 ticket and they give them out whenever they can. So it's not really an option to drive without it. Sad but true.

Found this tonight...

https://stonsho.com

It's removable if you want when you go to a show or event. That doesn't matter so much to me, I just really don't want to drill into the nice bumper, install the BMW plate bracket and then screw my plate on. Thought about using 3M tape to hold the bracket in place, worried it would fall off and I'd lose my personalized plate, which can't be replaced here. Might give this one a go.

I see that. Good solution.

That is a clever idea, but I can tell you that on a 650 Msport bumper there is literally no way my plate would last even one day mounted like that, and I'm not exaggerating. It makes the plate hang below the bumper. It's hard not to scrape these bumpers as it is, but something hanging down that low would not stand a chance. I was in the same situation as you, and I did what I always do because I think it looks best that way. A tow hook mount just to avoid drilling two small holes is worse to me. Here is what I do - I buy the BMW plate mount then I tap 5mm metric threads into the four places in the mount that hold the plate so I can use nice looking bolts instead of ugly sheet metal screws that rust. Then I use stainless steel button-head allen wrench bolts and four small stainless washers. They are rounded over and very small - it looks like your plate is held on by stainless steel rivets. Then I paint the mount to match my car. Looks much more integrated that way. Then, because the plate is actually larger than the mount and because I like the look, I go to the Mercedes dealer and buy one of their stainless front plate frames with no logo because they are thick metal and much higher quality than others I've seen.

Even if there's a 5 percent chance of getting pulled over and a $1 ticket ..still not worth dealing with and getting pulled over

Well that didn't work out. We installed the bracket and then went for a drive. Collision Mitigation Sensor dirty, please clean. I guess the plate is blocking this, even though they said this bracket was designed for the 650i. Maybe a base model one, so now we're back to looking for a solution. I could move it to one side, but I don't like that option. Anyone have any other ideas?? Thx.
