N63/S63 engines

Posted this over at the Convertible sub-forum without any success a few days ago so trying here instead.

Are the S63 engines in the M6 prone to the same problems as the N63 engines in the 650? I.e. heat resulting excessive oil consumption, timing misalignment, valve stem gasket leaks and injector failures etc? Or were those issues corrected in the S63? Any other caveats for the S63? Particular years to stay away from?

There have been numerous reports of people having excessive oil consumption with the S63/S63tu motors. However, one way to fix this is switching to a higher weighted oil. For me, I run motul 5w40 and my oil never needs topped off in between oil changes (3k miles). As for the other problems you’ve mentioned, I haven’t seen any cases. But I’m sure if you dig deep enough you may find someone having had those issues in the past. Enough to categorize it as a“prone to” problem? - Probably not.

The M5 forums you'll find some hits on the rod bearings, injectors and valve stems for sure. I have a rebuilt engine and haven't had any oil consumption issues since then and I too change at 3k intervals. I also own a 550 with the N63 and can without a doubt say that I have never had that level of consumption problems with my S63.

My brother is a master tech at BMW here in Canada and he says that the only thing mechanically the same on the N63 / S63 motor is the block everything else is pretty much improved or redisgned, he says about 80% of S63 engine components are not the same as the N63 ones and are for the most part different or more robust. He also said that he highly recommends you stay away from the N63 platform and if you do decide to go with it to aim for 2013+ as many improvment were made, and to change your thermostat from 120c to 90c to help with the engine heat issues.

Aside from the oil consumption on my 2013 N63 550 we have had nearly zero mechanical problems and we are some where around 150,000 miles on it. Most of our issues have been door locks, soft close door or interior door handles getting sticky, trim/bezels and AC vents breaking inside the cabin. We may buy a refurbished long block for the car rather than buy a new one as the seats, body and paint have held up superbly.

Same here, higher weighted oil and changing every 2500 - only because its easier for me to remember!

This is correct.

You can confirm it yourself by selecting the M6 on real oem and clicking through to the engine components, clicking the part number and seeing what other cars that part is used on.

https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/par...3-BMW-M6&mg=11

The only part I've found thats shared is the crank connecting rod.

And in fact, even the block is different.

Would like to know the differences in engines through the model years of the F13. I was told I have the S63T but can't find anything haha.

Correct the F1x M cars have the S63TU engine.

Do you know if any changes were made to the S63TU through the model years?

You will likely only see revisions to field replaceable parts. The F90 is a revision to the F1x. I know the pistons will fit the F1x and recently learned that the F90 oil pump is a direct fit. I wouldn't attempt a F90 long block swap but I am sure a very enterprising person with deep pockets could pull it off as folks have done LS swaps in M cars.
