What type of cars do you see and instantly judge?
For some reason Quora only sends me car related questions. I got a grin out of this one, sorry
This is the response, NOT BY ME Steve Neill (Ontario Canada), Specializing in the collector/rare car auto industry for the past 25+ years. Steve looks 16 year old by the way I’ve been driving for 15 years now, and am trained both in offensive and defensive advanced driving maneuvering techniques, both on the road and on the track. As such, daily I bare witness to what can only be described as a minefield of epic proportions out on the road. However, there are a few types of cars (and some correspondingly common bad habits of drivers) that set me off and truly make me lose my patience. They are the following: Toyota drivers: Anyone who drives a late model Toyota is typically spaced out behind the wheel. From not signalling, to following too close, to straddling lines, to driving too slow, to brake checking and a combination of all the above - they’re all indicative of the typical buyer that Toyota (the company) themselves targets: people who hate driving. The only reason people buy Toyota’s (outside of the 86/Supra) is because they want safe, comfortable, reliable economical transportation. None of those describing factors relates to attentiveness however. The owners of these cars use their cars as appliances, and tend to “space out” behind the wheel far more than others due to the side effects of those aforementioned factors. The same can be said for a latge percentage of Honda, Acura and Lexus drivers. Nissan Rogue/Qashqai/Kicks/Pathfinder drivers all exhibit the same traits - they’re massively inattentive. Female or male (typically the former), they’re often browsing their navigation or just moseying into other lanes (without signalling) with the same level of casual flare as a person tossing a cigarette butt. They also tend to brake check a lot. Mercedes/BMW/Audi drivers, in that order, from worst to best. For some godforsaken reason, these people have decided that because they could afford to lease one of these cars for $500–600 a month, that they’re ultimately better than all of us. Speeding, cutting in without signalling, brake checking, hard braking, excessive and fast lane changes, and running reds, they are by far and away the worst offending drivers out there. The Mercedes ones are the worst though - with one huge badge on the grille and a little one above it, you can almost see the following in their eyes as they cut ahead of you… “Don’t you know I’m better than you?” Hyundai Genesis Coupe /Ford Mustang (with an exhaust) drivers are the very definition of “wishes he was a car guy but really just likes the attention cars give him”. These drivers drive recklessly wherever possible, and since their cars are affordable and easily accessible, they modify them to bother other peoples day, either with loud exhausts, stanced setups (that requires slowing down to almost a stop for a pebble), and yellow headlights (seriously, why?). They’re childish at best, truly imbecilic at worst. Lifted pickup trucks should be banned from the roads. Period. It doesn’t matter what excuse they have (“I actually do take it off-roadin’ bruh”), there is no need for the lift. Their headlights (typically modified with high intensity bulbs) sit directly behind your car into the rear window, shining the interior of your car up like the fourth of July, and blinding you needlessly. The lift does nothing - most trucks have horrible approach/departure angles due to massive front and rear overhangs anyways. A lift won’t correct this. The lift reduces fuel mileage, few of them DO go off-road, and more often than not, the drivers are short fat guys who wish they were still 17, and not often, hard working men. Driving is a privilege - and equally so, a responsibility. It is NOT a given-right. I’d really like to see more advanced training for poor drivers, and an implementation of devices to detect and give penalties for no signalling for sharp low speed turns/lane changes and tailgating. However, until then, we’re left wondering if we’ll get in our cars and reach our destination without having a nervous breakdown. |

Agree on the lifted pickups. by far the WORST drivers in the US. They are 99% complete trash, and if I had to guess, they are either drunk, high on meth, and/or both, at all times. Usually they have horribly loud exhausts and drive extremely fast in traffic, knowing that their massive vehicles can kill 20 people in one accident.

Anyone who is still driving a Saturn! These folks are awful drivers... just imagine the mind-set of the thrifty, tight-fisted person who keeps that thing in running condition. It shows in there driving style.

Volvo. Marketed to accident prone drivers. Go figure?
White Buicks. Especially at dusk. Guaranteed to be an old person hopped-up on prescription medicine and four cocktails consumed at an early bird special “rushing” home for bedtime. |

People who drive vans piss me off. Same with old 90s Toyotas and Nissans.

Here in South Florida, Audis are an absolute plague. A rampant pestilence, sent by the devil herself to ravage every public motorway. About half of the Audi drivers down here are young females who bought a cheap base-model A3 because they think the LED headlights look cool, and then proceed to drive them at immense speed and miniscule following distances that are incongruent with the level of performance afforded by what is, in essence, a Jetta with leather. The other half are youngish dudes that have made it in to middle management and leased A5s, which they proceed to drive around neighborhoods and school zones like they're Emmerson Fittipaldi on methamphetamines.
As a BMW driver, especially an ///M driver, I feel like I should be one of the worst drivers on the road...but the unholy legion of Audis denies me that right day after day. |

Now that this thread has started, I'm going to pay attention and see what inherent stereotypes I make with cars based on brand... I subconsciously judge brands, but don't have any immediate stereotypes that spring to mind.
I make rash judgements about every driver of every car near me, because I roughly fit that original Q&A w̶i̶n̶g̶e̶r̶ contributor's BMW stereotype - I'm quick to change lanes to try to get through the light before it turns red. But I will share one very strong judgement that I make: If you have damage on the back of your car, I know the law says you weren't at fault; but I ain't the law. I'm going to do my level best to not be behind you, because that is like a big neon sign saying: WARNING: I am a timid driver who stops suddenly and hesitates when there's such a huge gap in traffic that the car behind me think's we've both got room to go. I am either so poor that I can't afford insurance, or I care so little about driving that I can't be bothered getting this damage fixed. Edit: Two others while I think of it: Anybody on a sports bike, I'm going to assume is an assertive driver who takes off quickly. I'm constantly disappointed by riders who do not fulfill this stereotype. That bike is wasted on you. Anybody on a chopper: I'm going to assume is an extremely considerate rider out for a cruise, but one not to be fucked with. I'm betting you're either in a Motorcycle club, close friends with someone in a motorcycle club, or the most dangerous of the three: someone who isn't a member of a motorcycle club but wishes they were. When it comes to choppers, I'm assuming if I touch your bike, it won't be the police I need to worry about. Last edited by xQx; 04-23-2019 at 12:29 AM.. |
