I know this is an old thread...but funny story. I am needing to replace my battery due to age... and I went to google to reconfirm the process to replace .... lo and behold this post pops up! I was wondering how old the current battery was and now I know I am just a few months shy of 6 years old!

FYI to others reading this…if there isn’t a sticker or other visible mfg/date or production date sticker/label on the battery…look at the top of the neg battery terminal to see if the week/yr of manufacture is engraved. See example in pics below:

Ailing Battery

Am a week into my first M6 ownership. 640D 2014... Discovered the battery isn't in great shape, not holding charge.
looking to rig up a trickle charger and was wondering if there are any grommeted drain holes around the boot floor to enable cable routing rather than through the boot lid?
cheers Steve.

You should trickle charge the main battery using the dedicated pos & neg posts in the engine bay. This allows the IBS to measure any changes in the battery.

I started charging my car often and the battery was bad. Mine is a 2016 and had the original battery which isn't bad. Had the dealer take care of it and was $700ish out the door

Just an FYI to those that have a few tools…and don’t mind changing the battery yourself…it’s not difficult to swap the battery in. The main battery is usually either a class size 95R/H9 (105 amp hour) or class size 49/H8 (90, 92, or 95 amp hour) battery.

Don’t overlook, checking with your local BMW dealership’s parts department because in many locations, they offer the BMW branded battery at competitive prices. My local BMW dealership’s parts dept sells the 105AH battery for $253 which was the best price in town for the large H9 battery. With my BMW CCA membership discount and core return credit…the battery only cost $227 and change. I used my Bimmerlink app to register the battery.
