How slow is the 640i compared to M cars

So sold my M6 after extended warranty ended (car had major oil burning issues as well). Went to an M4 and miss the size, comfort and look of the 6 series. I can get a 2018 640i locally for 46k. Will I be too disappointed in its power? Thanks

I own both a m4 and 640, totally different cars.

M4 is all power, light, not as comfy.

640 great cruiser n55 seems to be the reliable one of f06 although it's a boat. You really feel the weight. I just tuned mine but I think even with full bolt ons it may not feel very fast due to weight. If I were to have only one I don't think the 640 would be fast enough imo.

Never driven a m6 ..but my previous car was a e63 AMG. And there's a big difference in power and torque but it's enough to get in and out of traffic as long as u keep the 640 in sport .. honestly I enjoy driving the 640 . It feels peepy enough to do some light spirited driving ... I tell u ..don't miss the crazy expensive brakes and 10 qts oil changes

Also I think the car feels faster than 320 hp .. we have a 2015 e400 mercedes with about 360 hp and the 640 feels faster and I'm pretty sure the 640 is heavier than the e400

I have S63’s. Have had N63’s in a 650 and 750, and have N55’s in X5’s.
There is a very noticeable difference between the N63 and N55.
There is an incredible difference between the S63 and the N55.

You'll probably be disappointed imo, coming from an M4. The 6 series is just boat. Never driven a 640i but when my 650i was bone stock it just didn't feel very powerful with ~450bhp. Quick but not powerful.

My little brother has a 3 series with a N55 with full bolt ons and that is a blast to drive. My X6 with the N55 was actually surprisingly quick for being an SUV, maybe more comparable to how a 640i would feel, but it's definitely not something I would get for power.

So I looked at the specs, its 0-60 of 5.4 seconds. My M4 is 4.3, so I think I would notice that. I had an M6 and it was a beast, loved that car, just too many engine issues. Don't love the M4, but I have a budget of the 40s (I also have a 2007 911) so I am really looking at non-M cars.

I can get a 2016 650i m sport edition from my local dealer for $40,925, still under warranty till 11/30/2020. Has 36k miles

I’ve had a 2016 640 GC for a little over a year. I’ve also had some very fast cars. SL55, C63, several NSXs and a corvette or two. Nowadays I value the comfort of the big 6 and as far as power? Put her in Sport+ (With shifter pulled to the left) and mash your foot down. It’s pretty damn quick. And as a bonus you get the bulletproof reliability of that N55.

Have I lamented not buying the 650? Yes! A lot! Every time I see one on the road. Lol! But in the end I am happy with the 640. Especially on a long trip when she delivers almost 30 mpg.

After I bought the 640, I went out and test drove every variant of the V8 I could find: Several M6s (including a coupe with the competition package), an Alpina B6, and quite a few 650s. Imho, the regular 650 Msport was the best sorted of them all.

After all of that, though, I stuck with the 640 and decided to get my road jollies from the new C8 Corvette, which I will get in a year or so after the hysteria calms and production ramps back up.

N63tu can push over 600hp crank for under $5k in mods. Bm3, catless dps, intake, meth etc and your off to the races literally.

640 doesn't go that fast with bolt ons unless you upgrade turbo and ic.

If you have a 911 already then it makes it easier.

640 cruising occasionally spirited driving.

650 cruising with frequent pedal mashing.

I haven't driven many fast cars, but when i was shopping for my 6er, i was considering both 650 and 640 since the price was similar.
For a daily driver, I didn't see myself using any of that extra power, especially when reliability is so much worse. And power difference on a daily basis is hardly noticeable. On a track maybe. But who tracks these cars?
So even then, sound must be so much better? Minor difference again.

640 it was! Never regretted my decision.

If you're after a reasonable fast moving car maybe the 6'er is not the one, it's car for classy and fast enoug moving. Diesel is stated to accelerate 0-100 km/h in just over 5 seconds, if I need something else I swap the car, these heavy monsters do not start to move with some 40-50 extra horses anywhere.

They definitely need some work and turbo and hpfp upgrade. I think 450whp is pretty reliable on that engine and that whp can actually move that car. Stock not so much. Maybe in low speeds they may feel fast due to low rpm torque but in higher speeds acceleration they slow. Of course 650i is different animal especially with some bolt ons and tune. But that straight six is pretty simple and easy to work on so im good with it. 0-60 best i did so far was 4.7 with dragy on stock turbo and of the shell map

I'd definitely argue that. My 650i is running very high 10 sec 1/4 miles.

So the 640i is just not going to do it for me. I have my eye on a cpo 650i M Sporet edition. price ir right, colors are right, and options. Now I have to figure a safe covid way to test drive. They already advised I could drive alone, and that they would offfer me 36k in trade for my car. So if I like it I will probably buy it.

At that price point might as well get an M6!

I am looking at $41k for the 2016 650i. 2016 and newer M6s are all 50k plus.

I test drove a 640 and was disappointed in the pickup. Then test drive a 650 with the M packages and it's night and day. I love my 650. You won't be happy with a 640.
