Artemis 1 set to be launched

Using RS 25 engines from a previous Space Shuttle it's due for lift off today.

Apparently they have discovered a crack and also a problem with one of the engines, which the engineers are currently looking at. Let’s hope they fix it in time.

Engine number 3 is currently being worked on to get the temperature down to an acceptable level and launch may be delayed as it's a tricky operation.

Every time a launch is scrubbed you hear how "the engineers are looking at it" but I wonder, who actually turns the wrenches? You think NASA has a bunch of highly trained mechanics to do that sort of work or do they hand the SnapOn set to some dorky rocket engineers? Most engineers I know cant do even basic auto maintenance.

Not sure how it works here, but back in the USSR it was engineers working with wrenches on the launching pads. And military. Ask me how I know...

^ They did say that it's a long process involving tubes to bleed the liquid hydrogen and oxygen tanks so the no 3 engine temp stabilizes.
There are four engines in all.

With my last employer, we moved locations and we got together to assemble our new desks at the new place over the weekend. Picked up some pizzas, beer, the usual. One of the guys asked one of the MEs I worked with, "hey can you hand me that wrench?" while pointing towards a handful of different tools laying on the ground.

I shit you not, this Perdue grad 10+ years removed from school looked at the pile of tools contemplating which one was the "wrench" and handed him a drill. We all just stood there frozen with tools and bits of desk in our hands completely dumbstruck.

That space lemon ain't going anywhere for several more years! Boeing is the main contractor for the SLS rocket, and built the thing out of leftover Space Shuttle parts and some fancy bubble gum. Like their manned Starliner capsule for space station crew flights, there's no hurry to fix it as long as the government checks keep rolling in.

I watched a NASA press briefing a few weeks ago. If they miss 9/2, there may be a problem with 9/5 due to a mandatory launch restriction because of the FTS (self-destruct) batteries being past their brief service life. They have to wheel it all the way back to the VAB to change those batteries, and the crawler moves at glacial speeds.

Musk and SpaceX want to launch a Dragon capsule with two (?) paying space tourists for a loop around the moon on a Falcon Heavy rocket. Given how Crew Dragon beat Starliner by a long shot in capturing the American flag left at the space station by the last shuttle crew when Boeing was getting preferred treatment from NASA, I'd put my money on SpaceX sending astronauts around the moon before Artemis-2 flies.....

I'm sure it's not that bad but the $93 Billion dollar bill taken from taxpayers to fund the Artemis space program is questioned by some.

In decent weather I can see the launch from my house. Weather Monday was really bad (thunderstorms, heavy cloud cover). Today is clear and calm; hopefully the same for Saturday and all engineering sorted.

NASA is quite clever in solving problems like this....why, just in the last mission to collect data on the sun, one engineer asked: "But won't the module burn up as it gets closer to the extreme temperatures of the surface....?"
So the lead engineer thought about it and exclaimed: "I know - we'll go at night!"
