M6 GC Air-conditioning fail question/troubleshooting.

Good Morning peoples,
I drove my M6GC to dinner Friday night the air-conditioning was working fine. No issues, nice and cold. Went to dinner for about 2.5 hours, jumped in the car started it and it now blows hot air, not ambient temperature. Like proper hot as if the heater is on!
I wound the temp up to 26 degrees and it didn't change still hot, back down to 16. Still hot.
Does anyone have some troubleshooting ideas for me. I figured if it was loss of gas I would notice it over time not instantly like this.
It's as if the AC is stuck on heat or something.

Thank you in advance

Chris

I haven't had an issue with mine yet, but I have worked on several automotive AC systems. It has been my experience that a slight drop in pressure could result in the AC clutch not engaging so what mikerx5 says makes sense and is an easy low cost step.

Have you checked what the outside temperature indicator is saying. If that is damaged the AC system will not function properly. If it is indicating 50C the sensor is shorted. If 40C the sensor failed open or wiring broken.(check these at startup).

Had the car looked over by BMW, turns out the compressor and the evaporator need replacing.
To me i struggle to see how the A/C was working fine, I turn the car off. Have dinner, turn the car on, not working.
Either way it is getting fixed up.

Hi guys, thought I would give an update. Yes, BMW is doing the A/C under warranty. I am waiting on parts to come from Germany, due to Covid it takes a little longer to get to Australia. BMW identified the compressor and the evaporator need replacing.
Now the funny part! As quick as the A/C died, it is now working again!! Frosty cold now issues, as of yet touch wood. So this lead me to believe its not the compressor or the evaporator and maybe something like a sensor Wiggins out?!?!

Any gurus on here to help me out on this one?

So this bloody gremlin just came back today, the A/C has been working great ever since it randomly started working. Took it for a hard drive and had a few drinks, jumped in the car after a few hours and bam, no A/C just like before.
Any advice, I am possibly leaning to the temp sensors playing up.

A diagnostic check from a competent vehicle air con specialist should be able to tell.

I recently lost cold air and fortunately, like a few others, it just needed a recharge.

The mobile air con company I used was well recommended and carried on board a rather costly Denso machine which only needs to connect to the high pressure valve. During the process the machine did pick up a couple of small blockages which it cleared.

Could it possibly be a blockage? Only a check will tell.

So I have troubleshoot and found that I need to replace the compressor.
Does anyone have a clue as to how to get that thing out, it's hidden right in there!
I accessed it from the bottom to trouble shoot but to get it out, if need to remove the steering arm.
Cheers

Chris, just checking. Did you ever recharge since its such a low cost option?

Yes, a mate of mine is an automotive aircon guy. We checked the gas, all good. Wasn't getting power to the compressor either, push 12v and the clutch wouldn't throw. He checked the resistance and said I'm in need of a compressor.

Before I go down the rabbit hole with this compressor, can anyone tell me where the signal 12V comes from to engage the cloth on the compressor? As the tech could get a reading in the signal wire,

Cheers

Here are the fuses. Be sure to check the refrigerant pressure. If it is too low, the compressor clutch wont engage. The fuses are behind the glove box.

good luck

Thanks mate, I will get under there and have a look this weekend. I had the pressures checked and they are good.

Does anybody know where the A/C compressor relay is. Every time I look it keeps coming up with that big one in the boot next to the battery. Seems very large for a A/C relay.

The AC compressor magnetic clutch is switched by the Junction Box Electronic module on pin 7 of the 47 pin connector (A34 1B). The A34 is located behind the glove compartment.

You con check for power to the clutch at connector X13-1B
This is the connector to the magnetic clutch (see Y1)

You can also check the resistance on the clutch coil at this point to assure continuity through the coil.

The wire for the clutch is the purple and green wire (pin 11) on the connector. See the X13*1B connector pins arrangement.

Thanks so much for all your help, it is appreciated. So I should be able to push 12v down this pin and check if the clutch is engaging?

Thanks again.
