Turned 50 today. Am I officially in the old category? Can I post in the "you know you are getting old when" thread?

I wouldn't call that old. More like middle age. I'm officially old at 69 (there are older folks here), but why not post there if you want to? I say go for it.

PS - Happy Birthday! 50 is a big one. Hope you had a great day!

Of course you are. You may not be in the center of the lawn so to speak but there are members much younger than 50 who contribute to the thread. We more elderly old people get a chuckle out of someone who is younger than us thinking that they are old, but we understand that it's not just age. No hard and fast rules going on here. Just enjoy, have fun, and contribute your wisdom and experience if you choose.

I turn 60 in September and I’m not old yet but I consider myself still very lucky.

I’ve been “happily” married for almost 33 years and with the same wonderful lady for almost 40 years, I have a gorgeous Son, get to travel the world and have a job I love.

I have pretty good health for which I am very grateful.

My knees however haven’t been so lucky, 40 years of playing all sorts of sports have been very telling on them!

Happy Birthday.

I can’t even remember turning 50. From my perspective that isn’t old, although I think anyone over 29 can contribute to this thread!

I do that at 33.

^^^Like having an FU Million. Call it the FU Age. You can say what you want and not care what folks think.

(That said, one needs to be judicious with that freedom.)

Looking back from my lofty perch in the 70s, I think the teens, 20s, and 30s are the "know it all" years. In you 40s you begin to realize you don't/didn't have all the information. So be careful with all of that body language and eye rolling. Most of the time it's probably spot on and deserved, but once in awhile you'll realize later that the person you were eye rolling was really way smarter than you thought they were. Experience talking.

I feel lucky to be old for a bunch of reasons. I've always been a positive person and that lucky feeling has even gotten stronger as I get older. Not to be morbid, but my wife and I were in a horrible car accident in 2012. It took years to recover but we are both close to back to normal whatever that is! The experts say we are lucky to be alive. We had two grandkids in 2012 and we are up to 6 grandkids now. Thinking that we came literally inches from never meeting these additional 4 grandkids and watching them grow up makes both me and my wife feel lucky indeed. We try to treasure every single day.

Being in my 70s with good health and a great circle of family and friends is the best. Being retired after running in the fast lane career-wise for 50 years took some adjustment but I've now got the hang of it. I never used to take more than a week-long vacation at a time because I had this need to get back to work. Now our vacations are in the 4 to 6-week range. Not being in a hurry is the most amazing feeling to me. #feeling lucky indeed.

That's one thing I didn't take in to my old(er) age. In my younger days I shot my mouth off like crazy, the way young kids do. Now I know when to hold back. I take my time and think about what I'm going to say before I speak. No offense to those who like to 'shoot from the hip,’ so to speak. Just not my style.

PS - speaking on the forum here doesn't count because we're all just having fun. At least that's how I see it. Real life is different.

I feel lucky because a lot of people work all their lives for what I have, and many don't ever achieve it. It's not much, compared to many, own my home and my cars, great wife, great kids, healthy, tiny retirement (but it's getting better). At 53 I'm where I always wanted to be (minus the Ferrari, but close enough), just wish I could have had it at 23, but I suppose that's everybody.

Sixty four and still working. For a number of reasons. I like my job, make decent money, and work from home. I also have 7 weeks off per year, plus 11 holidays, so I really have time to do what I want to do while still working and making $$$.

I did have a heart to heart with my boss though. He knows my situation and that I could retire yesterday. I told him that you will still get 40-45 hours out of me of quality work, … I’m not the “quietly quitting” type. When I’ve had enough, u will know. BUT, I told him I’m done traveling. I used to travel so much domestically and internationally, I’m surprised the wife never served me papers. And no midnight calls when SAP (I’m in IT) craps out…. Save that for the younger folks in our group.

I did tell him if you need head count/numbers if there are ever any (more) layoffs, hit me first, not the younger kids…

So I guess those are some of my benefits of getting / being old…

I think there is a difference between shooting off your mouth and speaking your mind. I tell the truth, not what someone wants to hear.
