Exhaust Flapper Mod
Got this from the M5 forum. A lot of guys were using zip ties and wires, but I found that using hose clamps to hold the flapper open were a lot easier. Here's the thread:
http://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthr...2#post19854452 Very happy with the sound! |

I went digital and got the exhaustmeister. You can set the remote to use one of the rear view mirror buttons to open and close the valves.

Yes, take a look at the website, they have videos of before and after installation.
There is a definite increase in sound.

Yes, that is the exhaustmeister's function. It is a "plug and play" design.
Here is some info: "How it works: The device is remote controller to keep the flaps functioning like OEM (off position) or at the push of a button, forces the flaps on both mufflers open, as if you were on throttle above 3000 RPM or as if you zip tied them open like many of us have (I did previously). At start up, the flaps are in the factory position and open at your command when you push the on button on the remote (there are 2 included for good measure) or on the garage door opener if you program it. This means every time you shut the car off it goes back to the stock position/control." http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=953696

Here is the quote from the same post. I had a BMW tech install mine and he did it in 10 min. You will only need 1 exhaustmeister because there is one plug-in that opens and closes both valves.
Install Instructions: "Follow the instructions on their site. Very straightforward, took less than 10 minutes. They even have pictures if you need them. Basically pull the trunk carpet back on the left side after removing the clips, disconnect the factory plug, connect the ExhaustMeister plug to the factory connector and the factory wire to the other cable on the ExhaustMeister. Then take the white ground wire and connect it to one of the bolts in the area. I used the one pictured. Leave the blue wire alone, its the antenna. Put the carpet back. That's it." No issues since I had mine installed last July. Hopefully the website will be up soon for installation instructions.

I just received my exhaustmeister last week and started to install it today, however, the installation pages on the website are not found. Actually the pics to support the install. Does anyone have the step by step pics or the pics of the module for installation. I hate to mess with a $130,000 car in the blind when I have nominal mechanical experience.

Just did mine today after waiting weeks for the instructions to go back up, finally thought what the heck!
Popping the carpet fasteners is pretty straight forward, knowing where the module is located is the key bit you need to know (per your question). I've an F12 - it is literally upper side of the left rear wheel arch... When you pull the carpet back it's the only thing up there. Using the pic from the link below you'll see the connection type that matches you EM unit. http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1111529 Hope this helps. Ps carpet can be stiff, but just work at it! |

I thought that is not the case even in sport+ mode. At certain RPMs, the valves do open up but I was under the impression that even european cars do not have the valves open at all times.

I ordered it so I can control the sound. I wake up early to work out and don't want to wake up all of the neighbors. After 8am I plan to have the valves open all the time.

Just installed mine today, very easy, 10 minutes tops. There is a definite increase in sound but not a lot, it's not going to make your car sound like it has a race exhaust. It's basically the same exhaust note, just a little deeper and a little louder. As an aside, mine got really hot today, maybe it was just the Florida heat in my trunk but the box was very hot to the touch, anybody else have that issue???

What size hose clamps were used. I did zip ties to test. Definitely louder, especially in my garage.
