640d Gran Coupe vs 640i Gran Coupe
Has anyone had the pleasure of driving both the petrol and diesel Gran Coupe and can give their honest opinion?
I bought the 640i on the basis that I would not be doing that many miles, maybe 3000 to 3500 per year, and mainly local city driving so went for petrol on other people's advice. Lovely car but now wondering if I should have gone for the more common 640d after seeing around 17.5mpg with mainly local driving. A full tank gives me about 275 miles. Its bad yeah. I heard 90% of the Gran Coupes made were diesel, I can see why as its much more efficient and plus this car is made for long distance driving, crossing continents as I read somewhere lol, so a diesel would suit it better. I'm not a petrolhead or car expert, only really have experience with my first car which was a Ford Focus 1.6 petrol manual, special edition Ebony model mind you so don't have much basis to compare it to. So interested to hear from people who have driven big engine performance cars. |

I have a 640i - yes local driving the MPG is not great but i like to go against the grain. Petrol is more responsive, sounds nicer and look, ALL you see on UK roads are diesels. Im a contrarian, just dont follow the crowd, enjoy the purr of petrol whilst idleing and be happy with the knowledge you are pumping out less shit into the environment compared to diesel.

I went for the 640d as here in Ireland the 640i is very rare down to the tax system, but while looking into both diesel and petrol, I did notice online how the diesel engines are more reliable than the petrol, so I suggest you check the reliability part between the two if the fuel consumption is not an issue!

Hi, I have the 640D Very pleased with it, swopped my 435i for it and love the Torque that the twin turbo diesel has especially mid range and in real terms is just as quick as the petrol also giving a lot better fuel consumption! as mentioned BMW makes the best 6 cylinder Diesel engine there is, once on the move you would never think that you were driving a Diesel its so smooth, ill
be keeping mine for a long time, Last edited by dave550i; 07-13-2023 at 07:50 AM.. |

And how much does a full tank of diesel cost you? I can get about 300 miles full tank which is mostly local driving including about 50-75 miles of that done on motorway/highway at 50-70mph. Learning to go easy on the pedal now though as only had the car couple months now and on second tank of fuel. I don't drive much but having a car with over 300hp its so tempting to constantly put your foot down :-) And that fuel mile estimates just keeps dropping so quickly! Lol My cousin with a 520d only gets about 400 miles or less with mostly local driving which is not ideal. I was surprised thought he would get at least 500! A lot of diesel drivers I know only do majority local driving with very few motorway trips and lets be honest, long term that is not healthy for a diesel engine!!!
