Staggered wheels on 640xi?

So I have a set of Matte Black Giovanna Kilis 20x8.5 front, 20x10 rear.

Good or Bad? :

i don't know if its truly bad, let alone how bad, but if they came square, probably leave them square.

but, during the summer, i might try staggered if i were in your shoes and see how it goes

The overall diameter of the tire needs to be very close (use this http://www.rimsntires.com/specspro.jsp). That should also help you determine if the 10" wheel will fit, too (be sure to enter the offset).

I run staggered on my 640xi, and I recall them being 20x8.5 and 20x9.0, and 245/35/20 front and 275/30/20.

Thanks for the great advice!

I have the same tire sizes as you. Only the rear rims are a little bigger. 20x10.

I had them on my E90, so they will definitely clear on the F13.

I just don't want to mess up the tranny or drivetrain.

I was also thinking maybe run the car on sport+ mode which shuts off the awd system and the car becomes a rwd.

We'll see...

No problem, and just so you know, I am 95% sure that the tires I am running are the same tires that come on the x-drive version when you get the 20" wheels. So, I think BMW approves of our setup! Maybe someone with x-drive and 20" wheels can confirm that for us, though.

Sport + shuts off the AWD ?
Are you sure? I don't think so 😳

You are correct. XDrive is always engaged. While under certain conditions it may transfer up to 100% of the engine's torque to the rear, it cannot be turned off.

What's your technical explanation as to why you can then drift on sport+ mode?

Correct, sport+ only will take off traction control. AWD is still engaged.

The offset is going to be a 2-digit number. Mine are 33 front and 44 rear. It will often have ET before the number. You would have needed to enter those numbers in the http://www.rimsntires.com/specspro.jsp site to see if the 10" wheel would cause any issues. The front wheel shouldn't be any problem.

Thank you so much for the info

I know the rims will clear without any problems.

My concern is the effects of having staggered wheels on an awd vehicle.

Would it kill the transmission or the drivetrain? :

Simple answer: No. BMW offers the X drive coupe with optional staggered 20" setup.

AWD does not preclude oversteer, especially with the nannies turned off.

2015 640ix Staggered Question

I am interested in putting staggered rims on my 6. I have seen a lot of info about it and I know it is possible to do without damaging the xdrive. I am looking at some wheels that are 20" x 9"et35 front and 20" x 10.5"et38 rear's with a 72.6cb. Any idea if this setup will damage anything?

Probably not since those numbers are really similar to the BMW oe staggered wheel set-up...but a quick 2-4 minutes inputting your data into a wheel/tire calculator (compare the old front axle to the new axle...then do the same for the old rear & new rear set-up) at this site (or any other wheel/tire calculator site...and you'll see how much "poke" or "inset" the new set-up will have vs the old set-up: www.willtheyfit.com

BTW...what is the wheel bolt pattern? The f06/f12/f13 six series has a 5x120mm wheel bolt pattern...if you're going to use a wheel with a different wheel bolt pattern, you may need to use some type of adapter...so its dimensions will also need to be added to your calculation.

It's quite 'normal' to have mixed sets in the 'show' cars but as said X-Drive does not take much tolerance between front and rear tires, in the end it's the same what charts says other 275/35/19 tire can have bigger outsize than other so it's an risk always.

With X-Drive it would be wise to have same tire in every corner ...... but as many of us I'm riding mixed 245/40/19 front / 275/35/19 rear summer tires.
