Replacing SMC require coding?

I am getting code 9CC1. 'Stepping motor controller (SMC), left, signaling fault.

The right side light SMC was totally corroded, so I replaced it with an Ebay version...code went away. But the 9CC1 was there as well, so I decided to swap the two to see if the code would go away on the left, but now I am getting codes for both the left and right (HUGE eyeroll)
9CC1 (explained above)
9CC2 (right SMC)
9CBF 'Communication with step motor controller on the left disrupted'

I am using ProTool and I have the coding module.

Google for 2 hours no help on this...

Before and after screens attached.

Curious, what does the SMC 'control' ? What is it's function ?

Stepping motor is similar to a servo, yes?
