650i (N63Tu, N63T, N63N) 10yrs 120,000 Limited warranty
Two days ago I purchased a 2013 650i Coupe RWD ("Frozen Silver Edition", 64,200mi) private party. Very clean condition especially for the year and miles along with a clean title. Vehicle drove fine on the test drive, lots of power. Drove the car for a total of about 5 hours around town and put about 50-60 miles on the car. Then, accelerating onto the freeway, car loses power, "Drive moderately. Maximum drivetrain output not available. Consult service center." pops onto the IDrive, check engine light flashes, and limp mode. I work at a dealership so, I was able to get some help briefly scanning the codes and in summary they told me, you have a code(s) for High Pressure fuel pump and misfires in multiple cylinders. Several hours later of research I come across the BMW service bulletin for the fuel injectors, high pressure fuel pumps, Leak Diagnosis Module (NVLD) and the crankcase ventilation lines. Called several BMW dealerships to confirm that if I am indeed having serious problems with the car due to the parts listed in the service bulletins that it will be covered under the warranty. I had the car towed today to my local BMW dealership (BMW North Scottsdale) to be specific. I have spoken with to two service advisors and received great service thus far. Obviously, I am more worried about the cost if this may be something completely unrelated that could not be covered under the warranty.
Thoughts, Ideas, experiences anyone? Also, what I believe was the second owner purchased the vehicle certified pre-owned. He put just over 25,000 miles on the car and he had the vehicle for 31 months. Between tires and major mechanical problems like replacing almost the entire cooling system (some covered under CPO warranty) spent over $9,100 on the car... Last year according to the service records that came with the car the same owner also experienced a cylinder 5 misfire and replacement of injector, spark plug etc... |

I have a 2013 650 with 36K mi. Under light acceleration about a year ago, got the DTM and limp mode. I needed one cylinder injector and plug replacement. Couple years ago also had fuel vent valves replaced for not holding tank pressure. I also bought an extended service agreement for 3yr after CPO ran out and I used it to replace small gasket leaks on the oil pans. Other than that not much problems.
Service agreement runs out next August, kinda looking for the next car by then, but still love this car. Walt White will chime in to tell you some of those hoses on top of the engine are covered by warranty. |

Update:
Got the car back today from the dealership. All around great service, they even sent me a video of the vehicle on the lift. Diagnosis was the bank one high pressure fuel pump that caused the misfires. They replaced it under warranty and the car drives great. Although now I am having a small issue... The 12V socket charger in the center armrest and the ashtray are not working. Could that be a fuse? Would appreciate your replies, thanks. |

It's certainly possible. There are two fuse panel locations: One is inside the glovebox, behind a plastic panel, the other in the trunk, on the right side, under the plastic cubby. There should be a schematic for the fuses in the aft location helping you identify the problem fuse.

I had the exactly same warning pop up 2 weeks ago, scared me half to death....
out of the blue this happened to me. I pulled out to over take, put my foot down and the car misfired and didn't accelerate like it normally would. Then that message came up, it did say I could continue but with reduced performance. I immediately pulled over stopped the car and then restarted and it idled ok but I could tell it wasn't 'happy'. I drove home and the next day dropped the car to my dealership. I did note the car was running not at its usual urgency.... my dealership couldn't have been more helpful. They told me cylinder 5 had misfired recorded and limp mode was initiated. Upon investigation the team found all 8 plugs were heavily fouled and there was a split in cross over vent pipe they showed me this ( it was as per Walts pick ) . The changed the plugs and this pipe and the car back up and running again perfectly! The bill was fairly hefty for some plugs and rubber hose but hey... I'm glad it wasn't anything more serious like injectors etc etc. They told me i don't drive the car enough and to take it on longer drives to let it get up to temperatures. these car don't like short stop start driving that much. glad your 6er is up and running again fine now. |

well, I'm screwed then. All I do is drive 30-40 mph around town to the bank or grocery and back. Car has not been over 50 for more than 5 min in years. Only driven it 14K mi in 5 years. I need to go somewhere!!

Car has been driving great, no complaints until this morning.... accelerating on to the freeway this morning and it happened again. Flashing check engine light and the drive train malfunction message on the Idrive and limp mode. After some choice words were said out loud I limped the car back home. Pulled the car into my driveway turned it off and back on and the check engine light went away but the drivetrain malfunction message still popped up which I thought was strange. Planning on getting it towed AGAIN up to BMW North Scottsdale and having them check it out. |

There are many things like zoos, festivals, dining, museums, sporting events (major & minor leagues), golfing, shopping, casinos, etc all within a few hours of where you live and it would give you a quick get-a-way adventure as well as a chance to stretch the legs of your Bimmer (burn off some of that carbon build-up by maintaining a higher RPM at constant speed). Time to hit the road since many pandemic restrictions are getting looser.

UPDATE #3
Got the call from BMW North Scottsdale today.. Cylinders 3,5,7 and 8 were misfiring due to bad ignition coil packs. Unfortunately these are not covered under warranty. Due to the misfires which made the engine run rich (I think) damaged the bank 2 (drivers side) post catalytic converter O2 sensor. BMW North Scottsdale quoted me $1200 and change for the ignition coils AND $875 FOR THE 02 SENSOR. I am using capital letters because I think that is absurd. After calling another BMW dealership to get the part number for the 02 sensor I cross referenced part numbers and found the BOSCH O2 sensor for $63.. Called an independent shop "Parts Score" and they are writing up a quote for me to fix both as I am not going to get the work done at BMW North Scottsdale. I will update again when I have more information. The car will be listed for sale after getting all of this fixed. I will make sure to include the URL to the listing online when I get to that point. Thanks! |

NoBlinker,
You might want to look at my post below about my experience with that O2 sensor. I've still not replaced mine and still no dash warnings. https://www.6post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1793991 |

Update #4
I decided to get the ignition coils (all 8) done at BMW but declined them doing the o2 sensor. They called me today and told me that they replaced the coils but while road testing the vehicle after, it started to misfire again... They found that the cylinder 4 and 7 fuel injectors were "sticking". They replaced those two injectors under the extended warranty and now the car is ready for pick up. I asked them if they could just go ahead and do the rest of the injectors including the cylinder 5 injector that was replaced by the 2nd owner I believe. The service writer told me that they can not replace them until they "break". I asked the service writers personal opinion about this and he said "If it was me, I would replace everything just incase. The rest of the injectors the other high pressure fuel pump along with the other common problems but, I do not have the authority to do that and I do not want to pass that bill onto you." Has anyone else had this extent of these problems all within a 3-4 week period? Is this to be expected with just under 65k miles on the car and I just got the "short straw" end of this? It does not appear to me like the vehicle was abused nor have I abused it but, this is to the point were I am "scared" to drive the car even back from dealership. I am planning on getting the o2 sensor done at a reputable euro car shop here in Phoenix as well and maybe have them dive into the car more for a lesser cost. |

Move coils 4 and 5 to other cylinders (no tools needed) and see if the faults follow. Also check that they are all seated correctly. I read somewhere here recently that a firm push on the connector fixed an issue like this.
