Toyota Yaris as a 2nd car
What do you think about this as a second car. I have an hour commute to work every day and this would be great on fuel, and not putting the miles on my car. Out the door is about 12k. Insurance is an additional 100 a month to insure this puppy. Also can cover my car in the winter now and stop having to wash the thing every 2 days.
Is this too much for a beater gas car? Any suggestions?

I dunno, Could you stand to be in a little "Meep-Meep" econobox for 2 hours a day? I damn well know I wouldn't be happy.
After buying the E92 I actually find myself content to sit in traffic if I have to cause it gives me more time with the Logic-7 and comfy seats. 2 Hours a day is a lot of time sitting there in a pop-Can. BUT I think the Yaris is kind of entertaining. Though I'd prolly do a smart car first or a Mini just for entertainment. Not to mention, I'd much rather get hit in my E92 than in a tiny little car half it's size....

Take the Honda Fit for ride. A couple of thousand more but actually a fun car to drive. It will also hold its value very well even with high milage.

The whole reason I bought a car that is fun to drive is to drive it. If you are leasing and have a mileage limit, then I understand. Otherwise, IMO you're wasting your money buying another car and letting your E90 sit.

Also check out the Versa, Scion xD, Elantra and Lancer. I'm not too impressed by the Yaris tbh.

my sis has a yaris RS.. is a great car for city driving.. cheap on gas, and enough power to pass cars if you have to. The interior is not cheap and it is "modable" if you ever wanted to get parts for the car..

Yeah, don't do it.
My buddy was looking for a car last winter, and considered the Yaris (had a $15k or so budget), till the saleswoman told him not to buy one. He picked up a low mileage CPO Scion TC for less. The Yaris is a death-trap on wheels.

I test drove the Honda Fit and I really like it better. I want a gas car but the crank manual windows are a real PITA. I don't like the Yaris gauge pod in the center dash, but if I can get a cheap one for private sale I'll consider.
Right now the Fit looks like the best option, if I can get it a little cheaper than brand new.

I got a RAV4 V6. Its pretty peppy!
Yeah I had an E46 330 ci. I sold it and got myself an 08 RAV4 Sport 3.5 V6. I do sometimes commute 2hrs one way, and I drive a whole bunch. Funny thing is, this thing is quick for a truck. As quick as my 330 and dare I say quicker in some situations. I don't think of it as beater at all. I love the thing. Its different, has real utility, and can go anywhere in any weather. I am now in an area where it gets nasty during winter, and have been stuck twice already in my 330. My 335 is too low to the ground, and shovelling snow to pull in off the street into my driveway got old fast (I have to do this either late at night or too early in the morning.). With the RAV, it can snow to high heavens, I'll just simply drive over it. All things considered, I'll keep it, and probably change my car down the road. Buy what you want men, you only live once. As long as you are not starving have a house and all the necessities, don't worry too much. Gas is the least of your worries. Buying a side car is actually infinitely more expensive.

+1,000,000 to the Honda Fit. It's a great econo car, and by far bests the competition in terms of fun-to-driveness and overall quality. Get it with Honda's superb manual gearbox and you've got a great car with a great stick, great gas mileage, and great resale value. Can't beat it.

Fit > Yaris. That being said, I'd never buy one. I see a 3er as a good DD and look to pick up something weekendy/impractical (Exige, Noble) down the road a bit.

Do not get a second car. Spend $15,000 on your BMW or keep the $15,000 and use it towards gas money / pocket money. If you have a lease, it kind of makes sense; but that $15,000 can be used to buy your E90 after your lease is up. Just my 2c |
