steering wheel column noise

Hey guys, anyone experience a buzzing sound at speeds of 40-80 coming from the steering wheel column? It happens from time to time but mainly on the freeway. It's so annoying!! please help.

Me too. Sounds like a module or connector is loose near the base of the housing. I plan on opening up the column and seeing what it is. As soon as I figure out how to open the column...

I've noticed that too. Still can't figure it out whether it's coming from the steering wheel or the steering column. It's really bumming me out because I just got my MY2014 M6 gran coupe traded in for my M4, and I never experienced such annoying rattle with my M4.

I know this might be a long shot but what your explaining it almost sounds like the vibration sound you would get from the steering wheel with lane keep assist ?

Was hoping someone else would have posted this before I got around to it.
Refer to this thread: https://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=810952&page=8

It is your vibration motor generator resonating with the road.
Is it a kind of high pitch buzz? If so refer to SIB 661017 Defect code: 6137143900

Thanks for the info, but that's not what's happening on my car. Only on rougher roads I can hear something rattling in the column near my knees. It's not coming from the wheel.

They changed out the lane departure sensor and the sound is 1000% gone.

Great to hear that!

I bought 3rd party warranty with my M6 GC, so I'm hoping that will take care of this problem. I am going to raise this to the sales rep where I bought my M6.

I'm relieved but also surprised at the same time that there's so many out there with this issue.

Thanks to you all and bimmerpost for these information!

Wish me luck.

Faulty Vibration Generator

I had a similar issue. Took 3-4 visits to dealer including drive-along with service manager. Under warranty, replaced the steering wheel vibration generator.
Looks like the part number is 32-33-7-849-416

As you may know, this part is fundamental to the lane departure feature.

For sure it fixed the problem.

Hope this helps...

I was having the same issue on my coupe, it was driving me crazy. My service guy here in Miami hooked me up and changed the whole steering wheel under warranty. Haven't heard the noise since.

I just had the vibration generator changed few days ago. I'll say it took away of about 90% of the rattling noise. Subtle buzzing is still there...I'll spend several more days to see if the new part needs some time to settle in to stop the subtle buzzing. Otherwise, I might just want the whole steering wheel changed to new one.

Circled in yellow is the new one.

This is good to know. Mine definitely has an obnoxious noise coming from that part of the steering wheel. I will replace the part and see if it solves the problem.

Just replaced the vibration generator this evening. Not entirely sure that was the problem as the original generator didn't have much play and the only difference is a little more of the shaft exposed on the old one. I'll take it for a test drive tomorrow and hope for the best.

Update: It worked!! Drove the car around and it was definitely the problem. The rattling was there since I bought the car and just assumed that was how the lane assist worked, it is so much better after replacing it! Does not sound so cheap anymore.

Question is, can I just remove it and not replace it? I don't want or care about that feature lol

I have a vibration also. It isn't the lane departure warning. It happens on rough highway at a certain speed. It's a vibration down in the column, and I can kind of damp it if I put my hand down there. Annoying. And kind of loud, so a passenger can hear it. It isn't a motor, it has to do with the vibrations from the road. I mean, if the mount of the motor is loose, that could be. But it isn't because of the lane departure motor, I'm well aware of what that is.

it's the silver plastic trim. try opening the steering wheel, and put felt in the clips where the trim attaches. that should take care of it.

Same here, I tried to turn off the lane departure and noise still exist, but in far less frequency l I will try to replace the motor next time when I'm in for service and see how it works.

I'm having this same resonating issue. It happens when driving on less than ideal roads at higher speeds and comes from the steering column. Not to be confused with the buzz that is triggered from the lane departure/blind spot assist, which also seems to sound a bit more "buzzy" than I think it should.

I had this issue, the dealer knew exactly where to look, very common fault I suspect, had that vibration sensor and indicator stalk replaced, fixed 95% of the issue, I put the 5% down to rubbish plastic / trim quality
