Considering purchase

All, I’m considering the purchase of a 2014 650i xdrive convertible. I’ve done some reading and have engine concerns. Am I crazy? The car is like new with only 5,600 on he odometer. It was regularly serviced at the dealer despite the low miles. I know it has the updated N63 motor. Should I be concerned about the updated motor vs the original? Should I run? This will be a daily driver. I can’t believe a $105,000 car depreciated $60,000 in 8 years.

Don't be concerned. You will read a handful of horror stories, but as a general rule the N63TU is considered pretty reliable. Mine just hit 50,000 miles, uses zero oil, and the only thing I've done under the hood is new plugs a month ago and the new style breather hoses that are still under an extended warranty. I daily it 365 days a year, including snow.
As for depreciation, I got mine when it was less than four years old for exactly half price. $58k vs. $115,805 sticker.

I have the exact same year and model and couldnt be happier. I purchased my about a year ago with 20k miles. I now have 30k on it and 0 issues. I just had my 10k mile service done and they found nothing wrong with it except needing new tires. Honestly i expected something to do wrong on a 8yo car, but its been perfect.
Its also my daily driver and i put about 10k per year on it.
Also, i know mine had more miles than then one your looking at, but i paid about $20k less a year ago. Just a FYI.

Thanks for the quick replies. My wife will daily drive this car. I called the original selling/servicing dealer. It was in the area all it’s life and only serviced where it was sold. It was serviced yearly. This will be our first used car in years, as we usually lease. We are also considering a Mercedes AMG convertible. So we still have a few cars too look at. I also need to do a professional inspection of the BMW.

Can't compare vs AMG, but I had a 2015 F06 650xi for about half a year and absolutely loved it. I also read a lot of horror stories about the N63 engine, but the problems look to have all been solved with the N63TU and the 2014 has the TU.

That car ended up getting totaled after the engine got flooded during Henri last summer, but it wasn't the engine's fault. Replaced it with an 2015 F06 M6 and am even happier now. If your alternative is AMG, you may want to consider the M6 as well.

We haven't set on any one specific model yet. The wife wants a convertible first, and we can't find one of those within our search parameters, a coupe. We are looking between $40-$50k, and less than 25,000mi. This 650i just happened to show up because it only has 5,000 miles, and the age is our only hesitation. Three of the 4 tires are original, so we are planning to address this in our negotiations should we move forward. We also have to consider the age of the remaining rubber such as serpentine belt and radiator hoses. The car appears to have been stored indoors it's entire life and doesn't even have as much as a rock chip in the bumper.

I spoke to a local BMW specialty shop and he posed no concerns other than those mentioned above. Of course the other things that can appear with age are electronic components.

Garaged is good. UV and heat from outdoor parking do the most damage. So few miles in so many years… would ask how often it was started up and how long it was run at each outing. Also reason for tire replacement. Have a good indie mech look it over closely.

Your wife will love it if she doesn’t mind not having it connected or if you don’t mind going through the hoops to upgrade telemetry to 4G.

All, I want to thank you for your comments. We decided on an 2023 M430 Coupe. It was actually a nice experience at the BMW dealer. I wasn’t expecting that.
