Smile E38 MPars: A Cinderella Story

I've been on the lookout for 18", 19", or even 20" oe wheels to mount with dedicated winter tires...and I've been unsuccesful in finding something within a few hours driving distance. Almost had some 20" Style 356 wheels (w/tires & TPMS) about 3 hours away...but that deal fell through.

Everything else I found that I liked (style 367, 366, 281, 331, 351) where either too far away...or cost more than what they looked like they were worth...or came with tires (that I didn't want/need) which pushed the cost higher than I wanted.

So now that I'v'e made it into meteorological winter unscathed and actual winter is here (12/21/18)...my hand was forced to look at what I had on hand...an old staggered set of 18" Style 37 MPars that have been stored out in my shed since 2012.

The major problem I knew from the start is the offset difference. The specs for these e38 MPars are:
  • front - 8"x18" w/13mm offset
  • rear - 9.5"x18" w/25mm offset
...and the f06 wheels (non M) have an offset range approx between 30mm-44mm. I also was unsure if these e38 wheels would fit over the brake calipers (especially the front)...or if they would stick out too far.

After calculating narrower tires for both the front and rear that would fit the wheel's width as well as fall within overall circumference specs for the f06...and find out if there was an actual tire sold in that size (I prefer Michelin X-Ice or Bridgestone Blizzaks)...all that was left was finding out if the wheels would actually fit.

To my surprise...the 18" MPars actually fit over the brake calipers (front & rear) and don't hit any suspension parts and also don't hang out past the fenders. I'm actually surprised...so now I just gotta order the tires and TPMS sensors...and the old girl will have her own set of dedicated winter tires.

Again, sorry that this isn't about mounting some sick wheels...this is more about function over beauty...and if anyone has some spare wheels that have a lower wheel offset that they thought wouldn't fit...they just might have a second use.

For those that aren't familiar with the old style 37 MPars...they were kind of popular back in the day (90s). They were designed for the e31 8 series, e39 5 series, and e38 7 series...but their popularity saw them mounted on e32s, e34s, e36s, e46s, e53 X5s, and I've even seen them on an e63 6 series.
Finally got the E38 Style 37 MPars w/ Michelin X-Ice xi3 tires mounted on the F06.
  • 245/45/18 (front tires) | 8"x18" w/13mm offset (front wheels)
  • 255/45/18 (rear tires) | 9.5"x18" w/25mm offset (rear wheels)

Just like Cinderella...the shoes did fit. Here's pics just to show and perhaps help someone in the future that have some old BMW wheels...or even new wheels that have an offset range that appears to be outside the normal f06 offset range.

Again, this was all about function (being able to get through winter's snow/ice/sleet/slush/etc)...and excuse the dirty car...it rained the day before getting the wheel/tires mounted...and the pics were taken right after getting them mounted.

The illustrations below show the comparison of the 20" Style 356 wheel/tire combo to the 18" Style 37 MPar wheel/tire combo:

I have 19" dedicated winter tires and rims and they look quite nice. The side walls are higher for greater grip, but the overall look is better than more summer setups. They are stylish Brenton rims that have been gloss black powdercoated. IMO winter sets do not have to look like winter sets and they can still be totally functional.

I know its not sexy, but got my normal 1yr oil change, 2800 mi since last one (yeah, don't drive it much) but it was a quart low so what the heck. Dealer took 2 days to do it, but they gave me new 540i to drive. 2 days. . . dealer says they have a horrible time finding good techs so they are down on staff.

Gives the car a very nice touch. Did you order them pre-painted after providing the color code?

They came just in black. The quality of Hamann is really disappointing. But the result is nice. my paint shop were also disappointed they had to smoothen a lot.

done just last week. Was a pain but sounds great. The extra air getting into the engine bay helped reduce temperatures.

You can take the M5 F90 lettering with corresponding part number 51 14 8 078 714 which consists of 3 self-adhesive parts, one of them being the competition badge which you can then use for your purpose.

Installed my 10/10 spacer. On the rear I use Porsche marked 295/30 tires but actually they are 325 so 10mm on the back was the max. With normal OEM rims and tires a 10/12 combi is ok.

I'm in Canada, BC. You can go as dark as you want in the back but any tints on the front is sadly illegal.

Filters are K&N and the blue tubing was 3d-printed along with the MAF housing from high temp PE.
Stock airbox is completely removed. Similar to N63 intake but without all the fancy carbon fiber.

My hood remains closed so I did not care about the looks in the engine bay, just wanted it to look nice behind the grilles.
