Fuel Pumping Autostop driving me crazy
I swear I am not insane, but I have had significant issues with my two different M6's and pumping fuel. The autostop keeps prematurely activating. Even when I hold it firmly, it will still stop for no reason. I had a 2014 M6, brand new for 3 years and it was almost a weekly issue. Now I have a 2017 M6 Gran Coupe, and its problem is worse. I haven't been able to get a full fill ever because I get frustrated and just settle with a half tank of gas. I have tried every gas station in town (Los Angeles) problem is the same. My wife's 4 series 2017 has no such issue.
I took the car in for service and mentioned the problem and of course, I get it back with the "unable to replicate the problem" and nothing was solved. Am I crazy or has anyone else had a similar issue? |

My M6 is not having this issue, but a previous car of mine did. The only thing that helped was when I put the pump into the tank I would turn the pump clockwise by the handle, leave it to fill like that at an angle and it would fill the tank full. If I put it in straight, it would set off that autostop a couple of times per gallon.

Had that issue with a previous car (Audi TT). Turned out the fuel filler neck installed was for the wrong car. Audi fixed it under warranty.

I had this issue with 2 650i ad M6... all the same issue and the only way to fix it was to lift and hold the pump nozzle a little bit ...

Ditto for me, it depends on angle of pump[ handle, station, etc.

My 2016 M6 GC does it, and I think it helps to cock it to the side, pump hose down at 8:00 position or something. That doesn't always work, but it's better. You're not crazy. Well, you might be, but not about this.

The only issue is that your are running the tank to empty, and theres are pressure in the tank causing it to do that. Start filling up at 1/4 tank problem solved trust me

I never run below a quarter but still have the problem. It appears to get worse once the tank hits half.

So I'm not the only one dealing with this nonsense. Been going to the same 2 Chevron stations for 10+ yrs. Only the M6 has given me this problem & I have tried all the pumps at those 2 stations. Though my car is still under warranty, my concern is the dealership might damage some of my mods (has happened many times) if they replace the fuel tank. Thanks for posting suggestions! Will give them a shot....

I have noticed the same issue with my ‘19 M6 GC. Only car I have ever had that did this, but it has repeatedly done so with each trip to the gas station. I’m somewhat comforted to know the problem is a common one. I’ll try some of the hacks mentioned above.
Thanks, Danny |

Might be time to fill cans or a barrel for home dispensing .... that would drive me nuts. I get pissed that I can't just set it and walk away, I have to keep it squeezed and fully seated. On our M6 and Yukon. If I had to settle for a half tank every time I'd go nuts.

Tried a few things & 1 finally worked.
1. inserting the pump all the way in (all up in her gut), pulling the handle downward as far as it will go then turning it clock wise or counter clockwise did not work for me unfortunately 2. inserting the pump & just holding it there I'm sure would have worked but I would then have to hold it & pump manually. Was determined to find a way to be able to walk away 3. inserted the pump but not jam it all the way (just enough), let its own weight tilt the handle down to hold itself in place & I was able to fill up w/o having to hold the pump. We'll see if I can replicate this in the future Update: 01-05-19 Tried #3 above again & was able to fill up w/o any issues. Last edited by BadSeed; 01-05-2019 at 07:51 AM.. |
