Joined the club with a 2014 M6

Hello,

I just traded in my '08 E92 M3 for a '14 F13 M6 last night, so I wanted to join and introduce myself. I wasn't planning on a change, but while I was getting my snow tires handled at the local dealership I saw this gorgeous Singapore Grey M6 sitting on the showroom floor with < 3,000 miles, and an appealing price. Long story short, a few days later (last night) I made the trade! It has the Silverstone interior and the Competition Package, Executive Package, and Driver Assistance Package.

So far I'm still getting used to the car, and unfortunately the PSS tires combined with the ice and freezing rain we have going on, means I've had to drive very timidly and haven't been able to really open it up. I will probably run it on the track at Loudon, NH in the summer once or twice (like I did with the M3), but mostly it will be my daily driver and occasional road trip car.

In the short term I need to either find good snow tires that fit on these monster 20" rims, or spring for a new 19" rim + snow tire combo ($$). Long term I'm eyeing the Dinan Stage 1 ECU upgrade, and a few minor things. Would love advice on good upgrades (style and performance).

Not sure on the snow tires, I park mine in the winter.

I don't know if 19's will clear our big brakes either, but if there is an answer, someone on here has done it and will share.

BTF13M6: Thanks! I will get some photos as soon as the weather is less awful It's been sleeting/freezing rain since I picked the car up last night.

I thought, and I welcome the groups knowledge here, that the stock rims are 19" and the Competition Package doesn't change the brakes, just bigger rims (and the power/suspension changes), so I assume that 19" will fit? I don't have the ceramic brakes FWIW.

After lots of searching it sounds like OEM 19" rims with squared up winters are the only real option Spending that much money on rims I don't love seems silly, but seems like options are pretty limited. I'm going to call my local dealership tomorrow and see what they can do for me. Bummer.

Pirellis have snows for our 20's and you can go size down 255 fronts and 285 rears

I could find Pirelli 285/30R20s on TireRack, but couldn't find the same type in 255/35R20. Is there another source I should be looking at? Thanks!

Today I drove a 2014 Singapore Gray with Silverstone and Black M Wheels (comp, exec, DA and B&O)

I love the color combo and that Silverstone kind of grows on you after a few minutes.

I wasn't feeling the Comp Package on this short ride, even in comfort mode it took some hard hits. It has a great roar to it, nothing like it.

Yeah the silverstone totally grows on you!

I agree the Comp Package suspension is very stiff, even in comfort, but I like it. The M3 was pretty stiff, and I really lean more toward the sports car side of things.

I wish mine had the CF inlays instead of the wood... Your photos look great!

I think the Conti DWS tires will fit (a quick quick glance shows TireRack has them in your sizes I think*). They are an all season** and so far I have not had any issues with them.

*Seems BMW changed tire sizes on the M6GC at some point? The website lists 295 and 265 and TireRack has a selection for when your car was built.

**All Season tires are probably best for your climate (and Chicago). Snow tires are TERRIBLE in the dry and wet - but GREAT in the snow. And the fact is 98% of the time from Nov-April you are driving in dry and wet and not snow/ice. Believe it or not, I got this advice from Nokian.

Oh yea, I got my DWS tires at Discount Tire - they were not only less expensive than TireRack but the entire package (with install) was much less expensive than having them shipped from TireRack and then having an independent install them.

Doug, thanks for the comment. My understanding, and this seems backed by the butt dyno, is that good high performance winter tires are much stickier in the dry than all seasons, if the temperature is much below 50 degrees. Some quick googling seems o back that up:

"According to research cited by the TIRF report, at temperatures just below freezing on dry pavement stopping distance for vehicles with all-season tires can be as much as 30 per cent longer than for vehicles with winter tires." - http://www.rubberassociation.ca/file...Understood.pdf

I also drive into Vermont and New Hampshire frequently during the winter. So I absolutely have appreciated the Blizzaks I've run every winter on my previous cars (M3 and S4).

Also I would never run all seasons in the summer. Due to bad timing, I ended up tracking my M3 while it was shod in Pilot Sport A/S tires. Hilariously different grip than a good max performance summer tire (Like the Pilot Super Sport for instance). Not even close.

I will admit that most folks probably aren't doing track days in the summer and driving into Vermont in the winter, but hey

I will be the first to agree that all-seasons don't compare to a summer tire in the summer. I can already see lots of compromises in handling with my DWS tires compared to the stock run-flats (summer only).

However, I think you would be surprised how deceiving your butt can be in determining these things.

Take a gander at the HX MXM4 (an all season) figures for stopping in the wet or dry at 23 degrees vs. say the snow tires. The results are almost scary.
