M6 vs 650i M Sport Package
Darn it, my conscience (and a few friends) is telling me to save some money and "settle" for a 650i...hey, at least it still has 445hp! And cool rhombus exhaust pipes! Thoughts?!?!

If you don't want the M6 don't drive it what ever you do!! I didn't want it at all and couldn't justify the extra 30k but once I drove it I couldn't get it out of my mind. It's just way more fun to drive. You'll never need to 440 in the 650i let alone the 560 in the M6 but it is like crack cocaine so don't drive the M6 and you'll never know what you're missing. If you have driven it and are still asking this question then you have already made up your mind and you are getting the 650i.

Ha, thanks for the warning! I haven't driven either. I'm just driving my 525 in sport mode, wondering what going from 185hp to 333, 445 or 555 will be like. I did however drive passenger side in a Nascar race car going 180 last month, I'm thinking that's what the M6 feels like, but I wasn't behind the steering wheel which I'm sure is much sweeter!

The advice is absolutely correct. I had an 06 m5, bought an 11 550 and had it about 18 months and got a 13 m5. The difference in the cars is remarkable. And the m6 is such a great daily driver too that there is no downside to having the extra power and performance capabilities that at some level were there in say E60 m5. The M's are awesome and in my humble opinion worth the spend. But you can never go back.......

I test drove the M5 and I've got to say that for my driving style, I prefer the power band of the 650. It has much more urgency right off the line; you don't need to get the revs way up to feel the power. Plus I like the security of AWD, since we get snow in the winter where I live.

Check out my blog (Feb. 2013) for my comparison of my 650xi coupe with the M6 coupe after I did the 2-day M School (blog link is in my signature). My reflection back then is probably more eloquent and detailed than anything I'd say now a year later.
Can't go wrong either way, but I agree with the guys above that you probably shouldn't drive the M6 unless you're seriously considering it. If you think you want the 650i, just test drive that car and forget about the M6. If you're prepared to pay the extra for the M6 and want the best (in terms if performance and bragging rights), then look deeper into the M6. The M goodies, extra power, and the badge make the car worth the extra money, but it's really not necessary for daily driving (of course, we are talking about living in a world where a $100k 6er is "necessary" lol).

To add my 2 cents as I am waiting for my ED 650 Sport edition redelivery. The 650 has a couple advantages IMO. First colors, I wanted red, can't get it in the M6, orange is closest. No thanks. Losing the gorgeous sunroof is another minus with the M6. And I think the award winning ZF 8 speed auto is a better all around tranny than the DCT. Lastly love the LED fogs on the 650 - gone on the M6.

Next best thing to a convertible. I think the carbon fiber is ugly IMO. |

I don't like sunroofs especially ones that don't open. I prefer no sunroof. The large sunroof does look nice but the CF roof looks better imo. The fact is that the M6 is significantly better than 650 which was the OP question. I did love my Gran Coupe but again M6 in a different league for not that much more money. I got 15k off list on new M6 Coupe in December so 118,400.00 for 103,400.00...I thought the GC handled pretty loosely barely better than the CLS...

Well the roof option is certainly a matter of opinion. I would not have it under any circumstances. There is no fact the M6 is "significantly" better than the 650. It has 100 more HP but only 20 ft/lb more torque. Also will be installing the Burger tuning stage 1 to my 650 - which will bring me to 500hp and 510lb. And a price approx 20% higher is without a doubt quite a bit more for a M6. Not worth it IMO. Last edited by mrjoed2; 01-21-2014 at 08:27 AM.. |

Sure the M6 is faster - not sure where the difference can be used outside of tracking it. If I can't get the job done with 500hp there's a problem. And again I'm not willing to sacrifice the ZF 8 speed tranny, sunroof, fogs, color choice & a extra $25,000.

Then buy a 640 bc 500HP isnt't needed on the street either. Its a completely different car no comparison. They drive nothing alike..We can agree to disagree on that one...I have owned both thats my opinion....Like comparing a 550 and M5 way different....435 vs M4...

And yes we can agree to disagree. BTW, If I was looking for the fastest street car around, I would have went for a Porsche 911 Turbo - would eat any M car. But wanted a luxury V8 GT. |

Hey guys, great posts! as you can see, there is an argument for all three models, that's why I posted this, I'm stuck and can't decide! Unfortunately, test driving is difficult where I am, so I have a "stupid" question. What is the difference between transmissions for the 640, 650 and M6. I thought they are all "DCT" where you can drive in automatic but switch to manual shifting if you want on either the steering wheel paddles are the shifter. Am I totally wrong?!?? Sorry, I am quite behind when it comes to cars as my current car is an antique (2006 525) and I never owned or driven an M car. HELP!
