Always found the interior on the F-gen 6 series one of the best modern BMW interiors, it also got quite a silhouette externally and is my favorite sedan on the road. Out of the Audi A7, MB CLS, and the 6 series, I'd take the 6 series based on looks, interior quality and design any day.

I have the 650GC and had a CLS550 (2013) for three years. My neighbor has a 640 which I’ve ridden in and driven dozens of times.

My 2 cents:

I would take the CLS 550 over the 640 for a few reasons. The first is the M278 V8, it significantly out performs the 640 in every aspect of driving except economy. It is butter smooth (much smoother than my 650) and has significantly more power (seat of your pants torque) than the 40. The trim level is also superior to the base 640 trim, leather replaces plastic on all surfaces. The air suspension is also huge if you drive in a climate that receives measurable snow. Lastly, two issues that bite me nearly every day in my 650: the sunroof actually opens (not just tilts) and the trunk opens and closes with a press of a button. (Our 6’ers trunks don’t open fully very well on their own and only close manually)

All this being said, the 650GC is a far superior car for many reasons, but that’s a different discussion.

Best!

I don't want a 650 as too many horror stories about the engine. Main source a upper level BMW employee.

FYI the pics above show a gen1 CLS produced through 2010, two generations of production old.

Toyed with the idea of replacing my 650i with a CLS550 (last gen) a while back. Back in the day I did just that with my 645CI and the CLS was a welcome change. This time round however the test drive was fine but getting back into the 650i just felt like home. The CLS is a typical Mercedes luxobarge but it lags behind in the cabin tech department and there are also way more of them on the road compared the the 6er (here in New Zealand anyway).

Comparing the two interiors, you can see the lack of design in the CLS as it mimicks every other Mercedes product that year

2018 CLS interior :

Looking at similar model year BMW: unique cabin design featuring a waterfall effect cockpit design making it both unique and stunning, best interior design we've had in the last little while. New 8 series doesn't even have this level of differentiation from the rest of the BMW lineup

2018 6 series interior :

Coming from iDrive you will also likely find Mercedes COMAND and the in-cabin tech a little trustrating, especially if this is your first Benz. For instance while every setting in the BMW is controlled through iDrive the Benz splits settings between COMAND and the instrument cluster. You will also find some cheap and nasty materials in the CLS where you wont find them in the BMW (climate control for instance).

All of this is subjective though and ultimately down to your personal preference. Heres an interesting comparison of the GC vs CLS vs A7

I've had many cars over the years from Mercedes, Porsche, AUDI, BMW, Land Rover, Volvo and Mini. I've spoken to quite a few Employees from these brands over the years, many we're "upper level employees." Not a one of them has ever admitted to any of their cars having problems. Even when my 2000 M5 was having its engine replaced for the 2nd time, or my Cayenne Turbo had just dumped all of its coolant on the freeway for the third time, or when my new at the time Volvo XC90 completely blew the transmission on a simple downshift.

I'm super curious about your upper level source....

Quite right. Car brands are like political parties where employees are expected to toe the party line. I believe that the N63 reliability debate, which certainly has merit, has been blown somewhat out of proportion over the years. The N62 engines in my 645ci and 740i were way more troublesome compared to the N63 in my 650i.

Throughout the years, I've owned various cars from renowned brands like Mercedes, Porsche, AUDI, BMW here, Land Rover, Volvo, and Mini. In my interactions with numerous employees from these brands, including those in higher positions, I've noticed an interesting trend. None of them have ever openly acknowledged any issues with their cars. Even when I experienced problems like my 2000 M5 requiring its engine to be replaced for the second time, or my Cayenne Turbo unexpectedly leaking coolant on the freeway for the third time, or when my Volvo XC90, which was new at the time, had a catastrophic transmission failure during a simple downshift, the employees I spoke to never admitted to any inherent problems.

It's worth

They told my brother who was a personal friend, not me. When he mentioned what I was looking for , stay away from all V8’s and 7 series.
I also live 600 miles away.
