Display key retrofit

Has anyone been able to successfully perform this retrofit? I tried searching but couldn't find anything on this forum. I saw a video on youtube with someone who successfully completed this retrofit on a F12 but there was no how-to or even a link of where to get the key. So I would like to know:

1. What does it take to do this retrofit?

2. Wheres the best place to get the key?

3. Will I lose any features that already come with my car?

4. How much would it cost to do this?

5. Are the features the display key offers the same as what you can do in Connected drive? Does either offer more features?

I'm buying my M6 in 2 weeks and this is one of the top mods on my list so any insight is appreciated!

Here's the video

I've never done this, and going through key replacement, I can answer #2 for you.

You MUST buy the physical key at a dealership. It has to get coded for your car. You also need to provide proof you own the car before they even order it for you. Expect this key to be in the $300-$400 range. (E chassis car comfort access keys were $200).

This video shows other retrofited features never even offered on the MY BTW...so you'll probably need to pay up for these to get all the features:

1. Remote start
2. Power trunk

This is an aftermarket Display key, it's not the same one that's offered in the G-Series models. We thought about offering for sale but it has too many trade offs(does not support comfort access) and is expensive at about $1000.

This is absolutely untrue. I am an automotive locksmith and make BMW keys each and every day. I make (and pre code) keys to every system from EWS, CAS, and FEM/BDC. I will admit though, automotive locksmiths with this capability are few and far between.

On the unrelated note, can you program the x5/x6 m keyfob to the 6 series? I really like it! There is a member on this forum from Singapore that offers this service, but it includes transplanting the chip from the existing key fob to the new one.

I'd be interested to know this as well. Anyone know if this is possible?

Can I hop onto this conversion too, I'd like to swap my keys over to the sleeker metal cased key fob with the tri stripes on the side. What's the cost and turnaround time?

From our Member's Classifieds, in "keycut and program"

Not Display key, but for guys also looking into X5M Razor Key.
This guy looks like he is located in Everett, WA.

It is mentioned in the thread that the original fob gets "destroyed".
This suggests that the chip gets physically transplanted from the old into the new fob.

So this isn't key programming...
