Bmw 640d Qs
Evening gents,
I am about to swap in to a coupe and I’m torn between the 640d and the 435d... both late 2016/ early 2017 with similar miles. The 640d interior trumps the majority of BMWs, even when comparing the 2017 6 to modern BMs... it’s truly stunning. However, I’ve got some Qs: The majority of my driving is motorway driving 300 miles a week - what’s the motorway mpg like in your experience cruising at 75? How are you finding it performance wise? The 435d is a BEAST but the 640d isn’t too far behind in terms of stats. Any advice would be great, Cheers CH |

Coming from a 428i coupe (still in the house, love the car!).... the 640d is a different beast, i love the 4 in many ways, but the 6 feels special! I’m getting 45mpg on a few motorway runs so far... good luck with whatever you decide!

What have your maintenance costs been like? How often are you changing the tyres etc?

Hi mate
I haven't driven the 435d so I can't comment on that but I assume it is a bit sportier than the 640d. The performance and economy are pretty similar, not a big difference here although is worth noting that the figures for mpg are based on cars being equipped with 18" wheels. I find that the 640d has enough performance for UK roads, my mpg is 37 at the moment, mostly driving thru the traffic (on 20" wheels with E rated tyres). I believe high 40s is very achievable on the motorway. All is left now is to choose the car you like, based on looks and interior quality the 435d has no chance here... |

Performance wise the 335d/435d have the same engine as the 640d, but the 3 and 4 have the added benefit of x drive. Also being lighter they are quicker to 60 mph. Between the 3/4 or the 6 - I think the 6 wins hands down. The 6 is a rare car where as the 3 and 4 are more common. The interior on the 6 is far more superior and has a luxury feel compared to the 3/4. In the 6 - having leather everywhere is great. The cabin is and feels better in a 6. More insulated and a nice place to sit. Spec wise, the 6 gets more even as standard. Don't get me wrong, the 335d and 435d are great cars but I think a 640d just has that edge against them. Fuel and economy wise, I've noticed I get more out of a tank now since the remap then I did in the stock 335d. MPG - I don't really check but it has been in the mid 40s when cruising along. Servicing wise - they are not that different between the 3/4 and 6. Tyre wear is dependant on your driving. I run winter tyres normall between Nov and Mar - Sold my 335d with 45k on it in May 2019 and it still had over 5mm on all the tyres (original set) 335d - Found it a little on the small side and the road noise in the cabin was starting to get annoying. The only thing I miss about the F30 is x drive and the coral red seats! 640d - Owned since Oct 2019 its a great car! The interior is just worlds apart from rhe 3/4 Series. However, it is fun being back in a rwd BMW! 3 and 6 interior comparison:

I've been a purist for light semi small cars ( my ex was Audi A4 B7 quattro 1500 kg.) and would not believe that I could turn to like bigger ones .... but the longer I've had this F13 the more I like it ! And I'm a lucky guy, my fiance did want to 'help' me and when it was time to separate from my past 'love' (that Audi) she said:'It's the same to me if I'm driving Audi or my Ford in future, I can sell my Ford and continue with Audi ......' so every now and then I can go 'back' and ride that Audi. It's good, less weighty, has good steering and some how beemer has been a bit back but now when the soft springs/some rods were replaced it has come to alive. It's really good drive and a bit unique because more rare than 3'er/4'er.
If you are after very enjoyable drive do not install too big/ heavy alloys/tires, those make a difference even the car is heafty weighty. Keep far from RF tires. |

My last 3 cars were 640d coupes, I've put (between them) over 210k miles on them. They are amazing cars for long distant driving and this is where the difference is between the 4 & the 6. Once you sit in a 6 series then sit in a 4 you will never look at a 4 again, considering it's where you will be spending all your time there simply is no comparison.
Performance wise, yes the 4 will be a tad quicker as it has all wheel drive, but all my cars were remapped with DMS Automotive and had 400hp so were absolutely rapid with around 750NM.. perfect for motorway cruising. Economy was fantastic and I f you tried keeping it at 75 you would easily get 40+ mpg, I normally cruised at 90 and regularly saw 35-36mpg and 500 miles out of a tank. Running Costs were low, the greatest expense were the tyres. 20" run-flats are never cheap, the fronts would last between 20-23k and be around £280-£300 a tyre, the rears would last 15-18k and £340-£380 a tyre to replace. I appreciate that you don't have to put run-flats on but there's no spare wheel and boy are they worth it if you get a puncture.

Madness when you think i got through 4 sets or rear tyres and 3 sets on the front over the three years, at approximately £1200 a set thats nearly £4K in rubber! Odd because i only paid an extra £70 plus vat for the full maintenance package! (Inc all servicing, discs, pads etc) I know a lot of people hate the run-flats especially on the 20" alloy option but i had maybe 4-5 punctures and if they weren't run-flats especially where i got them i dread to think what would have happened.
