Bmw 640d Qs

Evening gents,

I am about to swap in to a coupe and Iím torn between the 640d and the 435d... both late 2016/ early 2017 with similar miles.

The 640d interior trumps the majority of BMWs, even when comparing the 2017 6 to modern BMs... itís truly stunning. However, Iíve got some Qs:

The majority of my driving is motorway driving 300 miles a week - whatís the motorway mpg like in your experience cruising at 75?

How are you finding it performance wise? The 435d is a BEAST but the 640d isnít too far behind in terms of stats.

Any advice would be great,

Cheers
CH

Coming from a 428i coupe (still in the house, love the car!).... the 640d is a different beast, i love the 4 in many ways, but the 6 feels special! Iím getting 45mpg on a few motorway runs so far... good luck with whatever you decide!

What have your maintenance costs been like? How often are you changing the tyres etc?

Hi mate
I haven't driven the 435d so I can't comment on that but I assume it is a bit sportier than the 640d. The performance and economy are pretty similar, not a big difference here although is worth noting that the figures for mpg are based on cars being equipped with 18" wheels. I find that the 640d has enough performance for UK roads, my mpg is 37 at the moment, mostly driving thru the traffic (on 20" wheels with E rated tyres). I believe high 40s is very achievable on the motorway. All is left now is to choose the car you like, based on looks and interior quality the 435d has no chance here...

I had a 2016 F30 335d before the 640d GC and do around 300 miles a week on motorways.

Performance wise the 335d/435d have the same engine as the 640d, but the 3 and 4 have the added benefit of x drive. Also being lighter they are quicker to 60 mph.

Between the 3/4 or the 6 - I think the 6 wins hands down.

The 6 is a rare car where as the 3 and 4 are more common.

The interior on the 6 is far more superior and has a luxury feel compared to the 3/4. In the 6 - having leather everywhere is great.

The cabin is and feels better in a 6. More insulated and a nice place to sit.

Spec wise, the 6 gets more even as standard.

Don't get me wrong, the 335d and 435d are great cars but I think a 640d just has that edge against them.

Fuel and economy wise, I've noticed I get more out of a tank now since the remap then I did in the stock 335d. MPG - I don't really check but it has been in the mid 40s when cruising along.

Servicing wise - they are not that different between the 3/4 and 6. Tyre wear is dependant on your driving. I run winter tyres normall between Nov and Mar - Sold my 335d with 45k on it in May 2019 and it still had over 5mm on all the tyres (original set)

335d - Found it a little on the small side and the road noise in the cabin was starting to get annoying. The only thing I miss about the F30 is x drive and the coral red seats!

640d - Owned since Oct 2019 its a great car! The interior is just worlds apart from rhe 3/4 Series.

However, it is fun being back in a rwd BMW!

3 and 6 interior comparison:

Had a similar choice between 640i and 435i, both GCs.
Drove couple 6s, tried 435, and knew right away I wanted the 6.

Obviously on here, people are going to be biased towards the 6. Tried also the 4 series forum 😎

Echoing what others have said; running costs, tyres, maintenance etc have been similar to a high spec 4-series, you shouldnít see a huge difference between the two here

I've been a purist for light semi small cars ( my ex was Audi A4 B7 quattro 1500 kg.) and would not believe that I could turn to like bigger ones .... but the longer I've had this F13 the more I like it ! And I'm a lucky guy, my fiance did want to 'help' me and when it was time to separate from my past 'love' (that Audi) she said:'It's the same to me if I'm driving Audi or my Ford in future, I can sell my Ford and continue with Audi ......' so every now and then I can go 'back' and ride that Audi. It's good, less weighty, has good steering and some how beemer has been a bit back but now when the soft springs/some rods were replaced it has come to alive. It's really good drive and a bit unique because more rare than 3'er/4'er.

If you are after very enjoyable drive do not install too big/ heavy alloys/tires, those make a difference even the car is heafty weighty. Keep far from RF tires.
