OP, any updates? I'm thinking of an M6 but I've seen too many post about rod bearing issues. I had great luck with 650s. Wondering if it's worth getting an M6 after all.

Sorry to hear about the engine, not many options outside of warranty
I've had my 15 M6 GC for about 6 months now and it's already gone in twice, for replacement of all the injectors and the coils, but I have only paid 50 bucks. And, they are still struggling to figure out why it idles rough. I love how the car feels and drives ... but owning an M6 without extended warranty (not any extended warranty, a top tier "everything covered" extended warranty) is just too big of a financial risk ... so anyone planning on buying a used M6, do yourself a favor and factor in the additional 4-8K for the warranty (depending on the trier, company and your area) so that you don't have to witness something like this. I even went as far as getting pre-paid 2-time-a-year oil changes, because this engine likes to drink the damn oil. There is a reason these cars go from 140k to 50k in 4 years, they are amazing cars, but just an absolute disaster to own outside the warranty.

I actually read this in another thread and was planning on doing that haha... Didn't know there was a specific thing like MAF cleaner ... I will get it this weekend, thanks!

Nothing yet guys, the car has been at the dealership for 4 weeks or so now, they tore down the engine and are now waiting for BMW NA for the final verdict on what has to be done and how much this will all cost...

Jeez. I've been fortunate with my 650s. Still own multiple without any major issues. Wonder if I should get a M6. Always wanted to try one but don't want headaches.

My previous car was a 335i with JB4 running half tank E85 that I got at 45k and got rid of it at 99k and the only thing that went on that was the water pump which was fully expected. That car was well beyond its normal stress limits and didn't let me down once. As far as the M6 with the Comp. package I never once thought "I need more power" so I left it alone and then at 35k it blows a rod... just sucks honestly - If the car was tuned and tracked I'd completely understand and take the blame but I basically babied the M6 because I just genuinely enjoyed the car for what it was. If you do plan on getting one - do not skip the warranty - hard lesson learned for me... |

I don't need an M6 or more power than the 650. It's just been on the bucket list. With an extended warranty and a swap for a similarly equipped 650 and M6, I'd be losing about 25K, just to satisfy a bucket list checkoff! Maybe I will try to negotiate the M6 a little harder. They seem to not be a hot seller at all and depreciating like crazy.

So I heard back from BMW and they are sticking me with a bill of approx $20k as of now... Not really giving me a reason why this all happened and that's basically it. I called N.A. and pushed back and am waiting to hear back from them again to see if the number gets any better.
Update: No additional help from BMW NA - I guess that's all she wrote. Last edited by ab022688; 08-15-2019 at 05:45 PM.. |

i agree with a post above.... this car is only as good as it was operated from the previous owner.
If he cranked it up cold and floored it around... I can see it wearing quick. Mine takes 10 miles to warm up in the summer months... not many people ever wait that long. Too many tuned M5's and M6's and X5s out there with this engine that run totally fine. I'm surprised and not surprised that BMW didnt even give you an answer to what went wrong. I've also heard this same exact noise from a previous Porsche and thought the engine was toast, where in fact the idle positioning sensor was bad... so really bad timing can sound the same way. BMW is also known for throwing their hands up and replacing things without any idea

I'm surprised that with a failed engine, and there are a few recorded on here, that no one has suggested that BMW has interrogated the ECUs for rev range and time data. There's a risk, especially if the car was bought used, that it can prove to have been abused and BMW has a strong case not to allow a goodwill contribution. On the other hand, if the car has been operated within its specification and it fails then it simply is not fit for purpose and the owner has a justifiable claim against the manufacturer. "The ultimate driving machine" should expect to be driven within its performance limit and not fail so catastrophically.

For such a car the safest is to buy it from a BMW dealer especially if it is used. There is a lot of abuse and a lot of owners sell these when they may suspect something is not right. It is unfortunate when it happens.

I agree with this. Not sure, but has anyone had this issue who bought new and preserved it via warm ups, proper maintenance, etc?

At this point I feel like it won't get me anywhere by pressing the dealership or BMW N.A. - so just to elaborate on that $20k bill - the original total was something around $40k -$45k for a new engine and install.
BMW N.A. is making the dealership give me parts (the engine) at cost which dropped the bill to $30k - then they were told to do the labor at wholesale rates which further dropped the bill to approx. $26,500 - Then BMW N.A. is contributing goodwill of $6,500 - which leaves me with the $20k balance. I priced out a few used engines and installs and the best I could come up with was somewhere between $12k to $15k - with no warranty. I believe with BMW I get a 2 year warranty on the engine now - so it doesn't seem to be worth it to save $5k to go to a used one. I'd rather just get it done the right way from the gate. Either way it sucks... for a car that was stock and had 0 issues and 35k on the clock for this to happen... just feels like a really unexpected punch to the gut... by a gorilla... but in the end I keep telling myself that it could have been worse and the bill could've been $40k - so I'll try and be grateful - pony up - and hope that I'll get some solace when the car is back in my hands in the end. Moral of the story - Get a warranty - $5k could've saved me $20k right now - you live and you learn... |

If you are going to end up spending $20k anyway, have you considered just buying a higher performance engine? I am sure a whole new motor from Carbahn/Dinan wouldn't be much more than $20k

I have one of those aftermarket 5k warrantees. I have a feeling, that if I were ever to need it, I'm SOL anyway. I just dont trust them to do the right thing... or they go bankrupt every 6 months so you have no course. I did it anyway, just in case.
