refill coolant
good morning everyone
i have a 2014 650i grand coupe and a couple of weeks ago i got the refill coolant message, i immediately went to the dealership and bought some coolant, i topped it off and drive away. now every morning i keep the refill coolant message, after i drive the car for a few miles i stop, turn off the car and then back on and the message goes away immediately. could this be a sensor issue ? of course i keep checking for any leaks but there is none and the coolant is topped off until the MAX symbol. any help would be appreciated |

There are two places to add coolant and I really don't know how they relate to each other. One is in the front of the engine that has a MAX indication and that has to do with cooling the turbochargers. The larger one is on the right (looking from the front of car into the engine compartment) rear part of the engine compartment. See the attached image to determine if it is full. There are no markings. (My experience is with my car a 2013 650.)

Ditto Walt...you're supposed to "measure down" (with a simple measuring tool) using the filler at the rear of the engine bay (near the engine wall/Windshield)...but the charge air cooler reservoir (located near the front of the engine and below the engine cover) does have a max/min indicator when you remove its cap:

Yes if you have the N63TU engine. Either take a ruler or something (clean) that you don't mind sticking down into the filler neck (ie one of those earth killing plastic straws )...mark the measurement given in Walts thread above with something like a sharpie pen...then insert it down into the filler neck to see how low you are.
If you have electronic steering...then you won't have PS reservoir...so don't freak out if you don't have that reservoir.

Just to be clear, the N63 has two separate coolant systems. The one at the center front is not the turbo coolant system as labelled above, if that was meant to mean the turbos themselves. That system with the filler cap at the front center is a low temperature system that cools the charge air coolers - the two large silver boxes on the front of the engine - it cools the intake air to increase its density. That system also cools the two engine computers - the two thin silver boxes at the front corners of the engine compartment. You can trace the skinny coolant lines back to the reservoir. The coolant system with the filler cap near the firewall is the normal engine coolant system.

Just a quick thank you to the forum and those that posted here....I had been seeing the same issues as the OP and had an appointment scheduled with my independent shop for this morning. I found this post last night and I believe I have completely avoided an unnecessary visit to the shop (and learned something new).
This site has helped me so many times.... Happy New Year! Steven |

N63TU cooling system circuits
glad the info was helpful.
Here's some more info about the N63TU's multiple cooling circuits (its slightly different than the original N63):
