My wife ordered at Avocado salad at this restaurant, they brought it with no Avocados and didn't say anything. When asked, it took like 20 minutes to figure out they didn't have any Avocados.

WTF, say that when an order is placed.

FedEx. From the epitome of reliability to worse than USPS. Seems permanent now.

I went to the drive through at the bank yesterday to cash a check. I put the endorsed check, my drivers license, ATM card and a note requesting the denominations I wanted in the tube. Pretty clear, no? So why did the teller ask me what I wanted to do? It boggles my brain sometimes.

Happy Friday, boys and girls.

It was too much for me to get from the ATM . And if you remember, the last time I went to the ATM they had the canisters screwed up and it gave me $5s instead of $20s but debited my account as if they were $20s.

Yeah not case specific, just one of my "what are those americans doing in 1997 still" observations. I am 45 and never written a cheque in my life except to a car dealer in Allentown for my Saab.

The title of the thread "You HAD one job" implies that the given examples of poor performance have been relieved of their positions.

However more and more I am seeing incompetence is overlooked due to the lack of skilled or even semi skilled labor to replace said incompetence.

Sad state of affairs IMO.

I went through the drive-thru the other day and my total came to $6.28, I handed the employee $11.28 (1x dollar, 1x ten dollar, 1x quarter and 3x pennies). They looked at me in complete horror, took the money and went to make change. They then came back and asked me whey I gave them too much? I sighed, rolled my eyes and told them I wanted $5 dollars back. They nodded, went back to the cash register and then gave me 5, $1 dollar bills. The youth in this country have no basic skills. If the register doesn't tell them what to do they are lost.

To top this transaction off, they didn't count the change back to me and it was all crumpled like it came out of someone's pocket. All I wanted was one flat $5 dollar bill, is that too much to ask?

That has happened to me several times. The sheer look of panic when you hand them the bills and then dig out the change after they put the amount tendered into the register to calculate the change. It's like a doe in headlights. How the hell do you get through life not knowing simple math?

Don't start me on that shit. Having my kids home these past two years, it has been an eye opener what the schools teach here anyways. So much time on feelings, and emotions and mental health, and social justice (even for 4 year olds) and so little time on basic arithmetic.

I am budgeting for private high school because the public system here has absolutely lost it's god damn mind.

The way they teach kids math these days. F'n ridiculous. I don't do many cash in hand transactions these days but I used to always do what you and Morgen are talking about and can't help but think to myself how these idiots survive when they can't calculate such simple numbers. Sure, they can master their smartphones and social media. Provide the correct change on a simple cash transaction without that deer in headlights reaction? Fvck no.

Better put in something extra for grammar.

"-What do you want? -What have you got?", "Give me money (that's what I want)!!!"

This reminds me of ordering half a glass (of Coke) at a resort (beach) bar: they fill it up, pour half into the sink and here you are (it was "all inclusive", luckily).

With a phone (held high!) in the hand! The extreme/annoying/frustrating simplicity of the Calculator app in my new/current phone made me wonder, though. My (ten years) old phone has a quite more entertaining one.

4 year olds at school already? Wasting no time! When I was about 4 I had to learn the names of all the plants in the kindergarten (there were many, over a dozen of different ones!).

If your kids are still young, just WAIT until they get to around grade 5 and start teaching them to guess close to the correct answer when doing simple maths. Not the correct answer if they know it, they need to be wrong….but close.

There is no close in Maths!
“Mr Engineer, why do you thing your building collapsed?”

“I don’t know? I thought my guesses were close”

We changed colors in Virginia because of this exact phenomenon.

In the real world, we call this estimating or sanity-checking. The idea is not to develop the skills for finding the exact truth, but rather to rule out obvious errors.

For example, someone goes into a store to buy a $5.00 item, and pays with a $20.00 bill. The cash register says that they have $185.00 in change coming. As the cashier, should I blindly fork out that $185.00, or stop for a minute to check that I keyed in $20 and not $200 as the amount tendered by the customer? This thread is full of examples of people who lack this very skill.....

Oh I understand the concept, the issue I had was when my son received marks off because he knew the correct answer in his head and put that down. He was correct, but got it wrong because they wanted a close answer, not the correct answer. He was doing simple single digit multiplication and division in his head in preschool at 3.
