I am a bourbon drinker.

My only experience with scotch was Laphroaig. I found it undrinkable. Like licking out a fire pit.

Someone recommend a good Scotch for a Bourbon lover who wants to branch out a bit.

Anything that has buttery or softer notes. Highland single malts are probably your best bet, I imagine.

For a low cost option - try a Glemorangie 10yr. If you want something excellent, for a bit more, maybe the Dalmore 12yr. First one is about $35 a bottle, the second about $70 a bottle.

Both are mellow and not at all peaty or smoky that that terrible Islay Laphroaig. That shit is like drinking tobacco spit.

Dalmore 12 or Balvenie Caribbean Cask. The Macallan Classic Cut becomes surprisingly sweet with some water, but more than a few drops. It is an interesting one, but I wouldn't start with it as it is cask strength and I don't think you'd like it at that ABV.

Lol wow... Laphroig as your first experience with scotch... that is one of the most peaty scotches around and is in no way representative of a classic scotch.

Drink a Dalmore 12, Balvenie Doublewood 12, Macallan 12...

If you want to remotely even start touching peaty flavors go with something light like a highland park 12.

Definitely don't drink cask strength as your first foray into scotch... hell even Glenfiddich 12 for $39 is a good basic start.

If he added enough water to bring it down to a 86 proof or so I think he'd actually quite enjoy it. The character really changes which is one thing I like about it.

The Macallan 12 triple cask is another one I'd recommend. Not cask strength so good to go right away. Some cask strengths are good neat, others I find I like a little water.

The Ardbeg 19 I had the other day was cask at about 108 proof or so, but it was fantastic neat with no water. But on the other hand, the Deanston cask needed water.

And for some reason, Glenfiddich never really did it for me. There is nothing wrong with it, just nothing that interests me about it either.

I have almost bought that Ardbeg 19 a few separate times now... just can't bring myself to spend that much without trying it first!

I actually give Aberlour A'bunadh to experienced bourbon drinkers who are new to scotch. They usually like it. Would not give it to someone who drinks light beer and cosmos, obviously.

In my experience, if a person likes sweeter drinks they will be better started on a sherry cask matured scotch like Macallan 12, Glendronach 12, or Bunnahabhain 12.

The best introductory scotch that's matured in American oak IMO is Glenmorangie 10. Glenlivet 12 and Glenfiddich as you mention are decent options too. Monkey Shoulder might be good too even though it's blended and a little more rough. I think a lot of newbies recoil at the heavy oak / cask flavors of scotch, and a younger whisky that has less cask influence can be an easier intro.

The only reason I said to avoid cask strength because that is one of those things that is very specific... most wouldn't even know how to dilute it. I have both the Abunda'h and the Abundah Alba... actually prefer the Alba a tiny bit.

As far as Macallan, the only reason I wouldn't recommend it a to a new drinker is simply due to price and I would hate for someone to spend a lot of money on something they don't like. It's some of the highest quality liquid around but for someone that's never drank scotch, an $80 disappointment wouldn't be fun. Also Chris, I would recommend the Double Cask Macallan over the regular 12 as a first scotch if I had to choose as the sherry flavor isn't nearly as strong.

So I’m selling my bowflex to a friend for cheap. Kind of needed to give it away to make room but buddy said he’s like to pay me something for it. Was thinking perhaps we can trade for a good bottle of whiskey ($100-150?). Perhaps the Macallan 15 that ASAP recommended? Any other thoughts? I definitely lack anything that’s 15+ years.

The macallan double cask 15 WILL NOT be a dissapointment... its fantastic.

As someone else mentioned, I'd suggest something like Highland Park 12. Very balanced all around, creamy with some honey, a little peat and smoke but not overwhelming, and doesn't break the bank.

And to me, more enjoyable and complex than something like a macallan 12, which to me, tastes like the Buffalo Trace of single malts (not bad, just smooth and easy to sip without much complexity. A bit boring).

I'm new to the whiskey, bourbon, and scotch arena. I found that buying a few of the single serve bottles was a good way to sample without spending a lot of money. Total Wine has a great selection for an introduction. I actually like Dewars White a lot and it goes well with a cigar. I discovered that I like the blended scotches the most and I don't have to add any water to them.
