Road Edge Warning option in KAFAS

Hi guys, can anyone please let me know what this option I have under KAFAS ECU - Camera-Based Driver Assistance setting? Bummer code shows this under KAFAS ECU and there is an option of "Road Edge Warning". It's active by default but I have never seen this in action nor there seen any settings or option in Idrive. Does anyone know what it is and how it works?

If your BMW is optioned with LDW (lane departure warning)...then the coding parameters you posted allows you to select based on what type of roads you drive on. If you are always in an urban setting where all the streets have concrete curbs...then "curb only" may work for you. If you drive on urban & country roads that may not have a concrete curb...then select curb & grass etc. This will then allow the the LDW system to warn (by vibration) if you are leaving the pavement on a non curbed roadway.

This allows the LDW "lines" to show up on multiple types of roads. If you don't know what the LDW lines are...see the image and info in the pic below about BMW's Lane Departure Warning (which is usually part of the driving assistant pkg):

Thanks for reply Qsilver7, I do have the SLI but not LDW in my car. But strangely this shows with bimmercode. If I have the SLI can I enable the LDW by coding? Thanks

I think SLI and LDW are totally unrelated.

Unfortunately, that’s a question that I don’t know the answer to. Perhaps this has come up on one of the many BMW “coding” forums (or threads).

Because of the way my BMWs have been optioned...they didn’t give me a reason to put a mental “bookmark” on if this was something that could be added if you had one but not the other feature.

If your car already has the KAFAS/KAFAS2 camera for SLI, lane departure warning can be coded.

However, you will also need the vibration motor for the steering wheel to gain the required feedback that you are heading over the lines. If you already have Lane Change Warning or Active Cruise Control, you may already have this motor in the steering wheel.

You will also need a new button on your driving assistance panel to be able to turn LDW on and off (unless you code it always on).

The codes which needs to be changed (as per an F10 model are):

KAFAS:
3000, TLC_START_VERSION, default_on
3000, TLC_ON_OFF, aktiv
3000, SEND_MESSAGE_327, aktiv
3000, SEND_MESSAGE_345, aktiv
3006, ACTUATOR_ON_OFF, aktiv

Just to confirm, SEND_MSG_345 has changed to SEND_MSG_18A on newer models.

KOMBI:
3003, TLC_VERBAUT, aktiv
3004, ST_TLC_TIMEOUT, aktiv
3004, ST_TLC_ALIVE, aktiv
3004, ST_TLC_APPL, aktiv

HU_CIC:
3001, LANE_DEPARTURE_WARNING, aktiv

SZL_LWS:
3000, Lenkrad_Vibration, aktiv

FRM
LIN_PUBU_TLC, aktiv > this enables the button

KOMBI->3003 FZG_Ausstattung, 10->HUD_TLC_ENABLE->aktiv

KOMBI 3000: "HUD_TLC_ENABLE"

in FRM, SPURVERLASSENS_WARNUNG => aktiv = 01 Change to "nicht_aktiv = 00"

This should stop FCW from operating which 5AD enables from VO and all associated warnings.

KAFAS2

3020 TLC_CODING, 0B => TLC_START_VERSION => 01 = UNKNOWN (default: "PIA_mode = 03"; required to engage the system permanently if switch not existent)

BimmerCode Expert mode will not allow you to change the above, so you will need other coding software such as ESYS.

Wow...great info in the post above. I never would have “thunk” that it would take recoding of up to 5 different modules to get this feature to work.

If you can get hold of the FSC codes for Front Collision Warning and Pedestrian Detection, it would be easier to Vehicle Order (VO) code 5AS (Driving Assistant) to the car. Provided you had the vibration motor and buttons, you would then enable all 3 (Lane Departure Warning, Front Collision Warning and Pedestrian Detection).

The latter two use the camera to prep the brakes on a pending collision.
