from an earlier post
So here is a quote from the 2013 "Service & Warranty Information" booklet.

"BMW recommends that you check your engine
oil level whenever you add fuel to your vehicle. If
you need to add oil between oil changes and
BMW High Performance Synthetic Oil is
unavailable, you may top up the oil level with one
of the following approved synthetic oils. For
information on checking your engine oil level,
refer to your vehicle’s Owner’s Manual.
The synthetic oils listed below meet BMW’s
Long-life rating LL-01:

. Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30

. Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40

. Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra
SAE 5W-30

. Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30"

There should be a little cubby in your trunk to keep a quart of BMW oil. You may have a quart there. If you don't buy one and just keep it in there to add just in case.

Oil guys fall into three camps. 1) Use BMW oil. It's surprisingly affordable and good quality. 2) Use what BMW recommends, or something very similar 3) Hard core guys that use an exotic oil that they researched online that you have never heard of. This may or may not be more expensive than average oil.

If you don't want to use the oil they have...you can ask them if you can supply your own...some places will allow and some don't...again, you'll have to ask.

I heard good things about Liqui Moly. I personally use Motul 8100 X-Cess 5W40. Just ordered 10 quarts along with a Mann filter. Most shops use sub-par filters. I like to know what parts are going into maintaining a $100K car.

Castrol Edge 5w-30 Titanium. First choice would be Liqui Moly but it's not readily available in New Zealand.

Two decades of owning/driving BMWs - I've only ever had the oil changed at the dealership using BMW's recommended/supplied oil. Zero problems. For a road car, I wouldn't overthink it. BMW's oil is, most importantly, fully synthetic and rated for the 15k mile service intervals. The aforementioned alternatives rated for "long life" and fully synthetic (Mobil 1, etc.) will be just fine, too.

My BMWs have always been 100% dealer maintained, and therefore the cars got what the dealer used - zero issues with engines (certainly none related to oil quality). With the N63 line of engines, something completely unrelated to oil is likely to get you first.
