But not to get off topic, this seems as superficial as people putting “fake badges” on their car. I fundamentally don’t see the difference. I also won’t say people should/shouldn’t do it, but because it’s noise related I’d probably just say don’t be a dick and crank it to 11… I hold that same opinion for people who run catless and want to piledrive my ears with their stupid AK47 tunes…

I agree but sadly I don't think there's enough demand. Engineers want to do things the most efficient manner possible. The idea of adding layers of feedback into a drivetrain that is inherently devoid of feedback is something engineers probably scoff at.

Well even BMW had that whole collaboration with Hans Zimmer... and although that's not even close to what I'm describing, it's at least some recognition that enthusiasts like sound.

While I agree there isn't much demand for it, there also isn't a ton of demand for the performance variants (compared to the non performance variants). You're going to sell a lot more 330i's than you will m3's, but that doesnt mean you don't make an m3.

All this being said... im just bitter that I'll eventually have to succumb to driving a silent tablet PC with wheels attached to it. I don't care if it's fast if it doesn't provide me with any theater and drama.

I can't wait to see and hear that Nissan Leaf ripping through the streets with that F1 V12 soundtrack.

I just did a canyon run this morning in LA. Playing with the gears added so much fun to the experience. Thanks to the ICE instead of EV powertrain my car feels light and playful. And while it doesn't sound great there is at least some auditory drama. All this (save for the 1/4+ tank of gas I burned through) just reaffirmed why I love ICE.

My buddy has a Model 3 Performance but took his ICE car today. He really doesn't like the way the Tesla handles on these canyon roads. Says the steering is weird/numb, brakes feel odd, and no paddles or soundtrack zap all the fun out of the experience.

I don't doubt a fun nimble EV can be produced with how the technology is advancing, but the inherent "flaws" of ICE are what make it so fun and engaging for us.

This is the equivalent of having an Apple Watch make a second hand ticking sound. Terrible.

Pretty much - it's all the things that aren't perfect (relatively speaking) that makes ICE so intoxicating. I'm cool with EVs becoming the norm, as they are honestly long over due. It'll just make me appreciate the ICE vehicles I do own even more

I'm jealous that you have canyon roads nearby. Ugh illinois sucks. I need to move.

i dont think its gonna work. EVs dont shift, so does it keep getting louder based on speed ? or is it based on throttle position ? either way its gonna be weird. Pair that with no 'vibration' through the cabin from an ICE.

With the natural evolution of technology is does make sense that most cars will go EV. But what bugs me is the constant push by bureaucrats of certain countries and US states to ban gas cars. It's all political posturing/virtue signaling. I am not opposed to funding for EV infrastructure. But ultimately just let people decide which works for them.

It's similar to smart watches vs. mechanical watches. There's demand for both, and many people own each. Both have their own redeeming qualities that make them desirable.

I used to live in the Detroit area so I know that feeling of having endless straight and flat roads.

But hey at least cost of living is way better in your neck of the woods.

Cost of living is better... but I don't know about "way" better lol. Property taxes are out of control. The monthly payment on a $500k house here in Chicagoland is roughly the same as a nearly $800k house in Socal simply because the property taxes here are so high.

We've been really wanting to move to Arizona though. Beautiful landscapes, mountains and canyons, and cost of living is much lower too. I used to go to Phoenix area many times for work and loved it everytime. We'll see.... maybe in 5 years or so....

Tesla already has similar system built-in (not exactly the same) - called boombox, in which you can add custom sounds. Check Brook's Plaid from Dragtimes channel, pretty cool thing (starts at 3.23):

True but better than driving something completely silent. EVs feel like their balls never dropped in puberty.

Sound brings a sense of occasion both inside and outside the car.
Then don't buy an EV

We won't have a choice. The Boxster is going full EV in 4 yrs, Alfa in 5 yrs, and the recent iterations are likely the last hurrah for the M2/M3/M4.

So while I'd love not to, my freedom of choice is being eliminated.

Buy a used car or keep what you have. I.e don't buy an EV.

You do have a choice snd you should voice your opinion with your wallet.

I actually think the demand for EVs isn't nearly as strong as we think and there will be a large market share of consumers that want ICE. As such, you'll have some manufacturers that will continue to make an ICE enthusiast option as long as their collective lineup absorbs and offsets the emission allotment per manufacturer ala Toyota and the IS500.

You might pay a bit more for it via some ICE tax, but I'd rather pay that than shell out $3k for exhaust noises out of my EV.

Correct but not feasible at least for daily drivers. German cars crap out after 4 yrs and Alfas crap out when you look at a squirrel. We can buy the last ICE cars on the market and drive them a few years after these "bans" come into play, but everything gets old eventually and becomes a headache to maintain. Cars, ICE or EV, all have a shelf life.

Hansshow has this for about 1/3 the price.

A lot of companies sell the kits under their brand - there's even an i3 application out there somewhere. Tesla guys have a sense of humor about these things and just see this as a goof or just use the Boombox feature. The picture looks the same, so its probably the same kit.
