i honestly dont know,,it has what lloks like a phone cradle,,it has a plastic upper cover which clips off,,then has a button which you press, and can see 2 plastic hooks move,,which looks like it would unclip a phone,,also 2 little plastic short spikes which press down,,ive tried and looked for summit to release the whole cradle but nothing,,i have looked on youtube and can see a 5 series has the same sort of cradle which has a release mech at the rear of it,,i will take a pic later to show,,on the youtube clip ,,when cradle is released,,it moves up and there are 3 screws to remove it entirely.
mine is larger than this as it has a good space behid where he unclips to show screws,,ive also got a cig lighter socket/aux/usb inputs at the front drivers side of the cradle

Phone charging - requires a clip on adaptor

Hi

It is a old-style phone charger.
You buy a separate adaptor based on the make/model of your phone.
Your phone clips into the adaptor, that then clips into this socket.

Wireless phone charging only rolled out on later BMW models and never on the 6-series

Sounds like you're referring to the "base plate" which as already mentioned above is for connecting your phone directly to the car so that it can be powered as well as use the car's antenna. There are other diagrams that show available adapters for various phone brands...a few are shown below...more can be found using one of the online part database sites (look in "accessories" for the snap-in adapters):

Rasa,
I have an unrelated question. I have a lot of colleagues throughout Europe. Some use a single comma like we do in America and the UK. Others use the double comma as you do. I am curious what countries use the double comma and why. I never asked this question to them. Thanks in advance.

I received my 640 Cabrio with the snap-in adaptor for iPhone. As I don't use iPhone and have much larger Android phone, I replaced the snap-in baseplate with the BMW wireless charger part # 2 449 887. So I can charge my phone and have the antenna connection for better connectivity.
As the USB cable is not anymore connected I purchased a USB socket to plug to the USB cable, so I have an additional USB port for memory stick, HD, etc.

Attached pictures of the original baseplate and the new wireless charger, semi-finished installation.

My 2016 has the wireless. My iphone Max does not fit in it.

I guess it is like the Euro market cupholders, not meant for US market Big Gulp size cups or oversized phones.
