If electric vehicles are the future, what about those in apartments?
If electric vehicles are the future, what about those in apartments? A large amount of people live in apartments and have cars. They are constantly building massive apartment complexes and hardly any have charging stations and if they do, it's for a handful of cars. So what exactly are these people to do once all the automakers change to electric? I have a real hard time seeing apartment complexes investing massive sums into installing hundreds, if not thousands of charging stations in their lots.
Side question? What happens to those in electric cars stuck in blizzard on highways for hours on end and their cars discharge? How the hell do you get all those uncharged cars off road? Bring in a bunch of generators and tow trucks?

These are the important questions we as a people should be asking ourselves.

I'm no fan of EVs... mainly because I find them boring and soulless. But the questions you're asking have been brought up many times before.
For your first question... it points back to the charging infrastructure challenges that are being addressed. At a high level, there's different workstreams... from battery technology evolving to allow for much faster charging, to swappable batteries, etc. But full EV integration is still at a minimum 15-20 years out. To your second point, this was discussed recently. A stationary EV isn't just going to rapidly discharge in a matter of hours. I think there was at least one car in that recent storm on the Virginia highway which was an EV and it was completely fine. A bigger issue is ICE cars running out of gas much quicker as people have to keep their cars running to maintain heat.

No one is past the feel-good self-righteousness of saving the planet to have thought that far ahead yet. If you've ever seen the EV episode of Southpark, there you go.

Two words for apartment-dwellers...MASS TRANSIT.
In the blizzard scenario, the EV can generate heat using its heat pump with reasonable power efficiency. Since it doesn't have to run an engine to make heat, there's also a side benefit of the occupants not dying from carbon monoxide poisoning because the tail pipe became obstructed by snow. My BMW i3 actually has a setting to let it continue to run the heat/AC even after the drivetrain is powered down, which I use all the time during the summer when stopping while running errands.....

Just few thoughts:
- Most likely it won't be 100% electric until batteries can be charged as fast (or close) as pumping gas, so I predict it will be a combo between electric and hybrid vehicles for a while. - It's a myth that EVs can't survive a snow blizzard, one YouTuber tested this Model X with older resistive heating and got about 28 hours at keeping 70 degrees, obviously at 60-65 degrees, and use of heated seats it would last even longer. Some newer EVs are equipped with heat pumps and can produce heat for days, pretty much as long as gas cars. - As far as clearing roads from dead EVs, this goes back to my 1st point - we need quick charging EVs. Plus I'm sure tow trucks would love to make a few bucks... Quote:

Seems like a good question but how many apartments or other homes have gas stations attached to them? EVs will be fine.

Lots of EVs these days have excellent range and fast charging. This trend is only going to continue. Just like many people only have to fill up every week or two, the same is possible with a lot of EVs. Fast charge at an appropriate charger for 45 minutes and you’ll have better part of a full battery. |

You can always park a 480V diesel generator at the apartment parking lot. It’s about as “green” as the rest of the electrify we generate to charge all these EVs.

I live in a condo. Our building has already approved the use of an EV charger if we wish. Our building easily has enough capacity to electrify all the parking spots. Would only cost me a couple thousand to run power to both my parking spots.
Enough with the fear mongering already. |

People are really, really not thinking this through. Like at all.
I have been very bullish for a long time that we will not see EV's take over, I can see a relatively even split between EV, Hybrid and ICE in the near future, EV will explode for a short time but then plateau. I have also been very, very bullish that range is not as big a concern as people make out, the issue, is public charging, though it is tied to range to some degree. I see the following concerns;
I am a ruthless pragmatist, i have no skin in this game other than a) i live near a highway so cleaner the emissions the better and b) i am saddened to lose sports cars to EV. I don't see how we can convert to EV as quickly as people claim, it reminds me a lot of the AI driving that was going to change the world 5 years ago. I called bullshit then and it looks all but dead. I don't think EV will die but I strongly feel hybrid will have a role for a long, long time, as in decades. |

I used to live in the older part of West end Toronto, most people don't have a driveway or garage, street parking only and not reserved. You often had to park a block away from home. A few people tried to run extension cords to their EV's, the city shut that down quick.

If your EV and your ICE has a range of 300 miles, that doesn't mean they can be treated the same. You can't let your EV drop to say 50 miles of range because a) if you suddenly need to get out of your usual commute, is there a charger available? and b) it takes a LOT longer to charge. This is the problem in a nutshell, at this point, people just buy a hybrid because there's too much stress keeping the EV topped up. |

Hey, I'm a BIG pragmatist too and I have no delusions of EVs suddenly taking over and all ICEs relegated to the junkyard. It's gonna be a long and gradual process but eventually it will happen. When, who knows? EV is simply a much more efficient and overall better design to ignore.

Have you been to New York or any major US city. A lot of parking is done on the street or even worse rented parking spots blocks from apartment. Where do those people charge their EV's. It is a serious question that isn't fear mongering, get over yourself. You enjoying the honking? |
