Big Sur highway collapse
Yikes. Won't be many folks traveling Rte 1 near Big Sur for a while. This is gonna take some serious engineering to repair.

Even with a bridge, is it even geologically stable to put one in?

Hopefully nobody was hurt. Bridge is not the answer. You won't be able to construct it in that area.

Imagine being the first person to come around the corner and discover that right after it happened?

Get the PENNDOT engineers on it. They design and build impressive bridges in mountainous areas. The CALTRANS engineers can tack a couple of earthquake brackets on after traffic resumes.

Knowing CA, this bridge will take 5 years longer and cost $6bn more than planned...

Its crazy...but not the first time either. Back in 2017 there was a huge slide that took out HWY 1 also.

Crazy pics, especially having driven there. Doubt it will need a bridge, just a little 'road bondo'. They are constantly fixing Hwy 1, packing the dirt that falls onto it under the undercut edge, basically. It is an amusing exercise in mankind's effort to try to make something that dynamic into a fixed point.
