Pedestrian protection system

Hi guys,
Wife just called to say the pedestrian protection system activated on the car when she went over a speed bump, so the bonnet has popped up 🙁 has this happened anyone on here? and what was the out come regarding repair and cost, car is 2012 640d and I'm in UK.

New bonnet rams, not sure if the system can be reset or needs an ECU and it might need the sensor on the front replacing.

All in all not cheap.

Thanks for the reply, nothing ever cheap when it comes to repairing these cars, it's with my garage now, so will wait to see how they assess it.

There is a known "flaw" with all these systems. Essentially most are based on a optical sensor the full width of the front bumper area.

If the loads involved are significant enough or a simple bump compression in the right area then it will set off. The rams are one use items as well.

Well I guess the cause was the Mrs hitting the speed bump too fast, the lower bumper bottomed out on the ramp as can be revealed by some lights scrapes underneath, this was enough to trigger the safety system.
Expensive lesson learned.
