Once I started adding living cultures to my garden, I quit the tilling. EVERY container I read said doing so destroys those life-forms.

And I SO LOVE tilling the soil into fluffy, dark, soft mounds of Mother Earth's bounteous breast.

Different area, didn’t remember to spray the ‘todes on the planter beds. Just put it down on the lawn

I wish! I've planted them for nearly 20 years now. They never grow outside my borders and die off in the winter here.

Here a bit of a long one.
So I bought this old house on a 1 acre lot from a older couple who had let it get a little out of hand. I have many projects going at the same time (complete basement reno being one) but here's the one about the vegetable garden.
Follow along with the pictures in the attached album.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/bNR5WaePxGvE2NQC9

To the right of the white blockhouse you can see a bunch of green vines. Thats the target location.

Since these are all poison ivy and I contract the rash by even looking at the stuff, I waited until winter to tackle it. So with the help of my gf, (who is immune to poison ivy) we ripped out all the vines and the fence that was once there. There were two chain link fences about 4 feet from each other...weird.

Now the issue was all those vines' roots were still under there and this plant is very persistant. It is everywhere. So we decided to dig down about 1.5 feet and pull out every root we could in the area where the garden would be. So we did that. I dont have the final picture with all the roots, but it was a ton of work. I build a basic raised bed (only 7 inches) and 8 by 24 feet out of repurposed 2x4s from a removed interior wall. Then built a rain barrel to assist in some watering. I planned on needing 2 or 3 yards of dirt to fill the garden but ended up needing 4. The truck can hold one at a time so multiply that picture by 4. On Friday the 22nd, we planted everything. This past weekend we started putting in a 2 foot chicken wire fence to keep the rabbits out. I will update the album with more pictures as it progresses further, but I thought it was time to share.

First, congrats on the new house.
Second, all it takes one little root and those things will sprout. I would have done: a) till the ground, and b) thoroughly sprayed some vinegar.
You have a nice big yard. I would think about privacy- a nice vinyl fence will look good. If not vinyl, check out some photos of redwood fencing.
I built a lot of raised beds in the last 4 years. Bought the stones from Lowe’s. Attached are the photos of my backyard project. I am not a professional. I’m an RN and did this project whenever I had days off.

Fellow gardening fan.

Here's a photo of my front courtyard. The succulents around the fountain came from a local guy that cross pollinates and creates his own plants. Really interesting specimens.

Beautiful yard! Thanks for the reply. Id like to avoid fencing when possible. I intend to create a natural border eventually with lilac shrubs eventually being massaged to resemble a hedge. I just need to get out all the vines and roots along the whole property border. This garden section was only about 50 feet of a 200ft line of vines.

Thank you.
A hedge will look nice too.
Rent a tiller from Home Depot-you won’t have to touch this stuff. Use vinegar instead of ‘Round-up.’

Thumbs up

Took this pic today. Pay attention to the Crape Myrtle. In a week or so it will BURST with Blooms... The fertilizer spikes I use are AMAZING!
No one else's in the neighborhood even have buds yet.
