What is going on with my wheels?

Just noticed these little scuffs on the BMW caps? Wtf is going on? Almost like a white powdery substance when I rub it?

Aluminum or plastic corrosion (can happen to both).

Besides routine washing and waxing, I don't know of any other way to prevent it. Once it happens, I don't know of any way to completely fix it, but you can detail it (many mild and aggressive techniques) to make it look better.

Ebay knock offs from China are super cheap and look and function the exact same as OEM.

My wheels are experiencing the same issue. I'm guessing my problem is due to salt on the roads.
