Boy our cars are heavy

I was curious how the weight of my 2015 650ix convertible compares to the second car I ever owned - a 1969 Cadillac Coupe deVille. That car had a 7.73 liter cast iron engine, heavy steel chrome bumpers, steel seat frames, etc. Not much plastic. Well.....

1969 Cadillac - 4,640 lbs.

2015 650 iX Convert - 4,650 lbs. (10 lbs. more!) I was surprised by that.

A 2015 650ix coupe - 4,410 lbs (convertibles always weigh more - in this case, 240 lbs more.)

A 2015 650ix GC is 4,605 lbs - just 45 lbs less than a convertible.

The lightest 6 is the 640i coupe RWD at 4,001 lbs.

The only heavier car I have owned was a 1966 Lincoln Continental 4-door convertible at 5,480 lbs. I had no idea our cars were in the same range as the largest 60s Detroit land yachts.

The thing is, those old cars were a shell and an engine. Our current cars are big time safety shells with computers, engines, tech, and a bunch of other doodads. But yes, they are heavy despite light weight materials.

650i coupe 4,123 lb
650i cab 4,420 lb
650i gc 4,277 lb
M6 coupe 4,244 lb
M6 Cab 4,531 lb
M6 GC 4,299 lb

Sources -"The internet" ultimatespecs.com your mileage may vary.

Blows me away how heavy these things are given every component is lightweight. It's just that there is so much more stuff inside those fenders. Many pieces of straw will break a back eventually.

Yes, these are seriously heavy cars, and you can feel it when driving. It makes the drive very nice when on a flat, well-maintained highway - feels super stable. Where it doesn't feel as nice? In sporty driving (turns) and over bumps/cracks.

Heading into the mid to late 2000's, I feel BMW started going super-heavy across the line-up. Yes, there's a lot of tech, safety, and luxury, but these numbers are up there.
