2015 M6 gas cap

Can someone please send me a picture of your car gas cap?
I’d like to buy an OEM gas cap for my car? Where can I find one? Thanks.

Do you live in San Jose...as in CALIFORNIA? If yes...you should be able to drive in to any of the local BMW dealership's parts department...give them the last 7 digits of your VIN, and order a new gas cap.

Or you can use one of the online part databases (see examples below)...and type in your VIN...then look up the diagram to get the 11 digit BMW part nbr for the gas cap specifically for your car...then type BMW xx xx x xxx xxx (where x= the actual BMW part nbr) into a google or internet search box and find lots of online vendors/sellers that are selling the specific gas cap you need (since you used the correct BMW part nbr for it in your search).

Try any of the online part databases below (feel free to save them for future references):
  1. www.realoem.com
  2. www.bmwfans.info
  3. www.etk.cc

You need the part nbr for #19 in the diagram below...click the link then scroll down to get the correct 11 digit BMW part nbr to shop with:

I feel your pain...except for me...its the fuel filler cap on my e53 X5. The tether broke off this summer.

Too bad that the little plastic/rubbery tether can't be purchased separately. I guess just another way for BMW to keep pinching dollar bills out of our pockets. The fuel filler cap itself probably would last the lifetime of the car...so let's make a permanent attachment on the fuel cap side so when the tether wears out...they'll have to buy a completely new fuel filler cap instead of a cheap tether only.

I didn't pinch it. It just wore out. I suspect it indeed was the cheapest "rubber" and plastic part they can design to minimize material cost.

When I take my cap off, I never let it hang, or tug on it, or twist it. I simply place it the holder and yet it still broke.

Could it be that the part in question (thus the car) was often exposed either to extreme heat or extreme cold - both conditions which could cause it to detiororate more quickly and over a shorter period of time despite the lid over it? I have had the my 650iX for less than year but my F32 for almost 5 years (and an E92 before that) and never had issues or observed any anomalies even as cheap as the parts may be. Just my experience.

I always do the same and the tether on my e39 and e53 still disintegrated over time and broke. If you keep your BMW long enough...just plan on having to deal with a broken tether when the vehicle is sometime between 10-20 years old.

The vehicles here of a couple of forum friends who experienced the above issue aren't so old apparently but for me anything over 10 years would be an "acceptable" time after which I can take this one as well as other "annoyances" into account in just about any car due to wear and/or other factors
