Cup Holder Issue and A Solution

I first noticed the cup holder issue on my 650 (F13) and now on the M6 (F13).
Unlike my X’s that have spring loaded supports in the holders, the cup holders on the F13’s do not and most ‘cups’ (ie Starbucks venti) have the ability to move around (quite a bit). I’ve found numerous times I had to stabilize the drink with my right hand while maneuvering the vehicle.

I found the cup holder insert at Home Depot of all places. It is that clingy rubber material. It is made by Dorman who makes a lot of replacement parts for GM. You can see by my pictures I fit it in each side with that ‘fold over’ to fit in the central bridging space. I fiddled with the positioning till I had all the stabilizing flaps in a functional stance. This size was the Dorman 41001. Yes it slightly large requiring the ‘fold over’. The size down by Dorman was way to small. As you can see it fits right under the lip on the cup holder so when you lift your cup the thing doesn’t lift out.

I have to say I’m very happy with how these things are working out. They hold my cups or cans very snug. Not once have they lifted out. Each one was about 10 dollars. Well worth it. When you’re sitting in the seat, the angle of perspective just lets you see the circumferential flaps so the bridging ‘fold over’ is not outstanding.

Inexcusable, OE cup holders cannot hold OEM BMW mugs?! Lol

I actually contemplated installing the six-speed manual cup holder. It sits in the ashtray location.

If my steering wheel was on the wrong side of the car I would definitely buy one of the 6MT cup holders but unfortunately they aren't square or anywhere near it

There has to be a cleaner solution than this, maybe a spring loaded cup crimping insert rather than rubber gaskets?

The heat in FL will destroy those easily -- and ends up leaving this sticky black goo if left outside in the heat. Def don't want that issue in the m6 as I am having this problem with my 7'er right now.

It might be worth taking a closer look at the E70 X5 cup holders. They have springs that allow for larger and smaller cups to be clamped in. You might be able to cut the frame and repurpose it, it'll be a lot of work and risk
