What will be lost with 3g discontinuation

With a 5/2015 build date on my MY16, it appears that BMW will not do anything for me although I’m still holding out hope.
So, just what are we going to lose without the connection and what will remain?
Navigation will work? Pairing phones will work?

Hmm, I thought 2016 was not 3G. You are 3G? Anyway, yes, navigation will work. The NAV maps are loaded to your hard drive and your location relies on satellites unrelated to phone service. Phone pairing will work. What you lose is real time traffic on your nav maps, the ability to use the "online search" function for locations like stores (although you still have all stored points of interest in your hard drive map data), news, weather, the ability to send locations from your phone to the car, and some other things.

Ditto what Opie said. You won’t lose any phone or nav services…just the BMW Assist/Connected Drive stuff.

See the items listed in the screen capture of one of the BMW documents floating around the internet that discusses the things that will be no longer available after the 3G sunset:

Sigh. I went to a car show thing in Beverly Hills yesterday and saw some truly remarkable cars including a one of a kind Dellahaye. But the point of this story is that after the show i had forgotten where I’d parked - pre-senior moment. Lol! No problem! I pulled up the ‘My BMW’ App and it told me exactly where she was in about 1 second. When the 3G gets yanked, so will this service.

I also got an email from BMW saying that there was no update for my 2016.

Given that I’m not getting any younger, I might miss that find my damn car feature a lot!

I’m fairly unhappy about this. On the other hand, Evil Hackers and Government Chip injectors won’t have access to my car…

What I will miss is the remote services (the ability to send an address to the nav system from your phone and the ability to turn on immediate ventilation).

I’ve already lost those features on my f06 since its a 2013 MY…thus it had 2G which has already met its “sunset”.

The other stuff like the RTTI isn’t available where I live so I won’t miss what I don’t have in that regard. But I think in some urban areas…there’s another traffic broadcast system which I believe will still work if you have it setup in iDrive (can’t confirm this…but its something in the back of my mind). And losing the crash notification and theft recovery will be a loss, too….but those are two features I hope I never need.

If you have an iPhone, you should check the inbuilt apple maps rather than google maps. I accidentally opened it a couple of days ago, and noticed it had marked where I parked my car earlier that day.

And SOS calls. Concierge. Dealership appointments.

How did you recognize that your car is 2013 with 2G?
Mine was built 10/11/2013 however BMW officially started lifetime from 04/2014. So I do not know if it is 2G or 3G.

If you go to the BMW ONLINE screen (in iDrive)…if you have 3G…the little 3G symbol will be in the upper left of the screen. (See pic below for an example)

My 650ix GC has a 1/2013 build date which was built a couple of months prior to the NBT iDrive (it has the last of the CIC)….which was 2G and went through it 2D sunset back in 2015(?).

I really love this email my dealer sent! I want to respond with, “Just send the notifications through the car.” Oh yeah, that doesn’t work.

Idk if it will move, but I’m going to try this next time I’m out. It’s not showing up now, but my car’s in an underground garage with no cell signal.

...now that's funny! Texting notifications to your personal cell phone is probably how Crevier BMW intends to stay in contact with all the customers that have already lost 2G...and those that will lose 3G in 2022. They can't send notificatons to the car...so they will adapt by sending it to your phone.
