This topic has been covered ad nauseam so a forum search should really be your first stop. The year of manufacture and current equipment fitted dictate what can and cannot be done.
In short if you have CIC you will need: head unit, screen, idrive controller, new radio antenna amp, new audio amp, possibly a new ZGW module, some wiring modifications, control module coding. Very Expensive option. If you have NBT you will need head unit, screen, possibly an ATM module, coding to unlock carplay, control module coding. Expensive option. Just buy an MMI module to enable car play on your existing idrive. They are a dime a dozen nowadays, pretty much all from the same hardware manufacturer, and can be installed in under 30 minutes with no modifications to the car. |

+1 on the MMI or UNICHIP. Once you go CARPLAY or the Android equivalent the integration of mobile tech to your smart phone makes cic/nbt/evo irrelevant. But, with the press of a button that BMW system is still all there to be used at any time.
All the Manufacturers are now building their enter/infotainment systems around android auto and CarPlay. |
